There are programs like Auctionsniper.com which will automate the whole process. It’s more fun to go ‘Rambo’ and snipe it personally, but in case you can’t be in front of the computer or have access to eBay it’s an alternative.Lost a bid by 2 seconds and $10. I think at that point it may have something to do with how fast your internet connection is. It's cool, I set my top price, got outbid, and saved a bundle.
At the end though it’s not going to help if your competition bids higher than you. I now take your approach and just bid my max and call it a day.

I can only speak for myself, as someone who has been using eBay since 1998 - I remember it was so far back that the interface was reminiscent of Craigslist and picture hosting capabilities didn’t exist yet. No photos in the listings. From original A2s to wristwatches, I lost track of how many killer finds I’ve scored. I’ve been fortunate in that I’ve had very few negative experiences with on that platform.
I don’t know what the heck I’m doing but, I put in my max bid way over the highest bid at 30 seconds, confirmed at 4 seconds and lost by exactly $10 (with odd numbered dollars and cents) at 2 seconds. Don’t think it was anything suspicious, just didn’t win. It’s like gambling but I didn’t loose anything. [emoji13]

Their bid was higher than yours, and registered before time was up. The best strategy is to bid at the last second, so that there's less time for someone to outbid you, and to keep the price low. But if more than one person snipes, then the auction effectively performs like a sealed bid auction, and in this case they had a higher bid than yours, and eBay's proxy bidding system put in one bid increment more than your top bid, which happened to be $10.
Only way to bid on Ebay is to snipe, I use this

Have been using it for years, the free version allows 1 bid at a time which suits me, I have spoilt people’s days many times over the years with this bit of free software.

That’s what I thought. My max bid was lower than the winner’s max bid and the winning bid was confirmed automatically at 2 seconds. That’s cool.

Funny I messaged the eBay seller distinctivefootwear asking if they could tell me what leather one of their currently listed GW A2s was made off 2 replies hrs apart, 1st one it’s horsehide, 2nd reply it’s cowhide, seems they don’t even know what they are selling.

They might well do, as some of the jackets have come up on the GW sale pages and have been viewed/discussed (e.g. the 37J1B test jacket that came up).
RMC makes my favorite A1. I have come very close to buying one (usually priced around $1100 slightly used).
The chocolate Shinki HH and olive knits can't be beat IMHO. I tried one on and fell in love. The eBay seller once sold a Freewheelers A1. It wasn't "accurate", but I liked the pointy pocket flaps too.

I had the impression the seller sold like rare Nikes and such from a warehouse just by the guy’s name, so to correlate high end jackets with it was a little hard to digest; but that’s just me being obnoxious and biased from seeing these sneaker freaks camping overnight at the mall to get in line for the latest Air Jordans.
If I ever saw an RMC, or any Japanese maker jacket big enough for me I would certainly have a go at it. [emoji111]️

The seller has ample 44s from the Japanese brands. That size is certainly desirable and quite rare on Rakuten when I search Buzz Rickson’s. I’m sure I’m doing it all wrong and the Japanese proxy is the way to go...their 44s seem to match up to what we’d call a “42”, or even “42 Long” which really makes me envious.

I think 3 seconds is the shortest span Auctionsniper can be set to, it has been a while for me since I’ve used them so I can’t remember for sure. If you go ‘Rambo’ and do it yourself, you can go down to 2 or even a little less (depending on your Internet connection). I do sometimes miss the days of multiple browser windows auto-refreshing and hitting that bid button on another tab and try to get the kill.
At the end though if your competitor(s) placed a higher initial bid, how close you try to snipe will be for naught. If I want an item really, really, really badly, I bid high. Sometimes crazy high. Sometimes to the point that I’ll bid more than what I think the item is worth but it will put me just over the target if I end up bidding the highest.

I set my max bid at what I wanted to spend based on research and experience with the exact jacket. My bid was around 30% higher than the highest bid going into the last seconds. I simply got out bid. I thought about putting in a crazy high bid hoping that it wouldn't go too high. The only problem with that strategy is the same problem as when there is more than one person sniping. If someone else bids crazy high, I end up paying crazy higher than I want to pay. Slippery slope.
I love the game though.
