How Much Jewelry Do You Wear?

I have two piercings in each ear but rarely, if ever, wear earrings. If I do they're either silver or pearls.

The only piece of jewelry I wear every single day is a black stone ring I bought in San Francisco. Sometimes I'll wear a necklace but overall jewelry isn't something I remember to put on. I do like it but at the last minute I'll be running out the door and realize- oh no!- I left my necklace on my desk.

I do have a charm bracelet, too, though. I love charm bracelets. They're my weakness.

I don't wear that much. On a daily basis I wear a small diamond and emerald cross my boyfriend got or me when he was on a port call in Hong Kong that only comes off when I wear other necklaces or am in a formal dress that doesn't look right with it. I also always wear my college class ring and a thumb ring on my right hand, on my left hand I wear a spoon ring on my middle finger and a small turquoise bracelet my parents brought back form a trip for me. Other than that I might wear some earrings usually my pear or diamond studs but it depends on the day. Of course this all changes if I get very dresses up .

Gold signet ring on pinky finger, always clip on earrings of some sort and a stack of bakelite/carved bangles which i vary daily according to my outfit. I tend to wear brooches quite alot as well too. I rarely wear necklaces as i find them rather annoying on the whole, (i like a small string of pearls for evening), i do have some fifties sets of bracelets, earrings and necklaces which i wear ocassionally, although again, i usually end up taking off the neckace half way through the day.

It definitely depends on the day! Always my wedding band, usually a vintage necklace, pearls, bakelite bangles, a novelty vintage pin on my dress/sweater. Oh and earrings of course, often pearls or bakelite hoops. It really depends on the outfit! Of course, always some flower or jewelled vintage barrette in my hair.

Always my wedding ring (plain gold, I wanted to be traditional) and my engagement ring (vintage, his grandmothers). Both in the yellow gold the jeweler tried to steer me away from as "very out."

Gold goes out? Really?

Anyway, I have skin allergies and react horribly to silver and I had no experience with platinum or white gold so I wanted for a wedding ring what I knew I could wear every day. And yellow gold is fine for that for me.

I'd like to carefully add more daily-wear jewelry but needing it to all be gold makes that very slow. It does ensure I don't wear too much at once, though! I would like my next piece to be either a necklace (probably a string of pearls would be the most classic choice?) or a cocktail ring for my right hand, but aside from being pretty sure I DON'T want that one to be diamonds I am not sure what I do want it to be.

I'm not much of a jewelry person, I don't even have pierced ears. On a daily basis I always wear my wedding set - yellow gold wedding band, yellow gold with round diamond solitarire engagement ring, yellow gold with channel set diamonds anniversary band (husband gave it to me for our 10th anniversary last year). I also always wear a watch, which I alternate depending on my outfit/mood.

Occasionally, depending on my outfit, I'll wear a necklace.

Viola - When we bought my engagement ring & wedding band 11 years ago, it was at the height of the "platinum band-emerald cut stone" popularity. Round stones on yellow gold bands were so "out" and I went through the same arguments with jewelers trying to tell me it wasn't in style. Well, I don't want what's "in style" I want classic!

It's not that platinum can't be lovely - I've seen some platinum-and-sapphire pieces that were heartbreaking - but "yellow gold is out for wedding bands" just seems weird.

I like eternity bands with stones that go all the way around, but I'm pretty sure a trendy setting like that is going to date way more.

I have to say my engagement band is not exactly the style I would have chosen for myself but it was my husband's grandmother's. And she is still very much alive, and that she wanted to do that meant a lot to me.

I do think if I ever put another ring on that hand it'll have to be custom to fit around the engagement band but that's not exactly a problem to go crying about.

Jewelers are kind of crazy sometimes. When I was in college, I stopped off at the mall near my bus terminal to pick up a few things, and on the way out, I decided to look around Birks. I was dressed very much like a student with my book bag in tow. I paused to look at a multi-strand pink pearl necklace, and the salesgirl came by to say "It's not a bad price, either - only $6 500.00."

I wanted so badly to snipe "Well, at that price, I may as well buy two."

I THINK I prefer that to assuming I CAN'T afford something, but I'm not sure. lol

All the jewelers I've dealt with have gone out about how you can do it with no deposit and no money down and blah blah blah but as much as I like jewelry it's not something I would rack up debt for! At all! Ever!

My husband suggested I pick out something for myself for Christmas, but I don't have a good handle on what styles are what decade for vintage-inspired modern. Aside from charm bracelets, which only seem to look good on other people.

One of the few things I miss from leaving Florida is "grazing" at pricey stores. It's one thing when items are in the $5000 category- some salesperson will still try and get you to consider it. But when the jewels are in the MILLIONS, you know, and they know that you really are just looking. I really enjoyed eyeballing the Bvlgari window. The security guard was nice, and would play the "can you guess how much THAT costs" game. And there's a picture next to the necklace, with Sophia Loren wearing it. Big emeralds and diamonds. None of those cheap 1 or 2 ct. stones

So I was just on www.antiquejewelrymall.com and pondering possibilities. I do fear that, in general, most rings (and I love rings) from the '30s and '40s were not designed for women with short, square hands? Big rings, it seems like.

This and this seem like they would not be all of my finger joint, though. No, I'm not an August baby despite their insistence on the birthstone thing, I just like green. They had green amethysts though, and as a February child I am sure I could draw out some kind of justification.

Thoughts? Advice? Shared drooling over the Art Deco filigree necklaces?

My engagement ring, and that's all.

Lovely Man bought me a gorgeous string of freshwater baroque pearls for my birthday which I try to wear every day but the Hairy Offspring managed to break the silk thread the other day... it's been mended but I'm very wary of putting them within sticky mitt range on a daily basis now!
Likewise earrings, we had a nasty experience a few months ago when we thought he'd swallowed one of my little frog studs (am I giving the impression that our son is a fiend...??) so unless it's a very special occasion, just my green amber engagement ring.

And I have trouble with him trying to eat that, too....

That first Peridot is beautiful, Viola! I'm an August baby, but like you I would love them anyway. Both settings are definitely drool-worthy.

I don't have a pic, I'm afraid, C-dot... it came from a little shop in Truro who don't have a website even.

There's a bit of a story behind the green amber though, my first engagement ring was a green amber from another little jewellery shop, this time in Whitby... I wore it till the silver wore through and then one afternoon I caught my hand on a little tag of metal sticking out under a shelf in a shop and my ring snapped. I cried for days... Lovely Man tried to get it repaired but you can't repair amber jewellery in the same way because the heat you'd need to work the metal damages the amber. So now he wears the old engagement ring on a necklace, and I have the new one which is not much like the old one.

Every birthday and Christmas he looks for more green amber jewellery for me, the old romantic.

The most jewellery mine has ever bought me is a sparkly Eiffel Tower keychain from Paris.

Just to make me mad, they only sell the green amethyst set in silver. Beautiful ring, reasonable price, but I am allergic to silver! (Like a werewolf, my brother helpfully points out).

If I wear silver for more than a couple hours my skin just freaks out. And that's when its not in a piercing.

Can you still get that stuff like nail varnish that you paint on to the exposed surfaces and it protects your skin, or is that no good?

(Can't remember what it was called but they used to recommend it for earrings for people with a nickel allergy.)
