I use those smaller Homburgs for sitting in the shade on cooler days. Big hats I save for working in the sun.

Stetson Twenty Five Open Road:

Resistol Plains. Tag says 3” brim, but I measure it as 3 1/8 inches. 6” open crown and in wonderful condition: thin, dense, and smooth vintage western felt. It arrived with a dog bone crease with mule kicks front and back. However, it’s the kind of felt that will take most any crease you want to give it.

Dobbs velour. Firm, but not harsh or unpleasant felt. A full 3” brim with an overwelt edge. The problem is the crown. As Stefan warned me, the crown is quite short at 5” open. Bummer. This also a smaller 7 3/4 and from the rippled condition of the sweatband I suspect it could have shrunk? The felt is a nice shade of green that is hard to capture and appears more charcoal indoors. It took my band block and after steaming it fits perfectly, but that low crown is a dealbreaker for me. Off to eBay.

This one is outside my wheelhouse. A Las Salle Hats pork pie. An overwelt brim of approximately two inches and a back-bow.

I had to satiate a burning itch, and impulsively purchased this Knudsen Hats Bat Masterson. My first custom was the same hat, only a size bigger in dark brown western weight wool. this one fits better. It is also western weight wool. One of the few woolies I don't mind so much.

Honest to goodness, I've gone to Golden Gate Western Wear (home of Knudsen) and picked up hats that I was surprised to see were wool hats when I flipped them over.

It must be kind of amazing to be able to visit the shop in person. If they had more "ready to ship" hats in my size, I'd be impulse purchasing a lot more often. Although it would be great to custom order one of these in a fur felt, I agree that the western weight woolies from the shop really hold up and look great!

Another piece from the Jared delivery. The Golden Century by Stetson in a rich dark chocolate Vita-felt with a beautiful burgundy to brown grosgrain ribbon. The short brim is just a hair under 1 3/4 and is adorned with Stetson’s Mode Edge (Cavanagh) Jared was thinking The Golden Century May have been a Centennial model putting this one around 1965. Some of the manufacturing cues may support that. It commanded a Twenty Dollar selling price at the time of its retail. All around a sweet little hat. As we know I am with Mike @Redfokker when I say Support the Stingies! Thanks again to Jared... one more to come!
