Get Over It

I notice that they don't mention the death of a loved one, which is so very hard to overcome. So hard that it makes other circumstances seem like nothing. If fact, whenever I suffer some sort of reversal, I quickly remind myself that nobody that I cared for has passed.

Lucky you.
Lucky? It took the death of several family members and a few close freinds, in less than five years, to help me acquire this attitude. It was an epiphany. Better late than never.[huh]

That was a great article. "You should be with people who would swim across the Rhine river under enemy fire to be with you." Well, I would walk across hot coals for my best friend. But I'm really tired of hearing about her frustrations with herself, her job and her crummy boyfriend.

Some things are easier to get over than others. But, every friendship that is worth something is worth a shot. I think it's impossible to always understand the people you care about. Every relationship has it's ups and downs.
In real friendship you learn to take the good with the bad, and it's so important to have the ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes. So, circumstances that your friends complain about may seem silly or arbitrary to you, and it may drive you nuts to hear about those "problems". But as a good friend you will sit and listen to them bi@#$h and moan til' the cows come home because you are a friend and care about that person.
But, even though you are a good friend and want the best things for your friends it's totally normal for you to want to say "get over it"! It's just that circumstance in their mind may not warrant that reply, for in their eyes their problems make it feel like the world is closing in on them. What makes a good friend is the ability to not say "get over it", no matter how badly you want to:) There are ways to give a good kick in the pants to a friend in need while still being caring and supportive. No matter how silly to you the root of their sadness is, to them it's a big deal.

Now I KNOW people are stealing my ideas. Here's part of a column I wrote for The Fedora Chronicles, posted last July. Holidays we should have. Note Number 6.

National Pick Up Your Pants Day – A day to celebrate the aesthetics of having ones trousers actually covering the tops of ones underpants.

National “Da Vinci Code” Fire Days - A three-day event to burn the millions of copies of “The Da Vinci Code”, thus relieving future generations of garage salers from the hassle of lugging them in and out of the house before finally marking them ‘Free’.

The Great American Unfunny Nun-Out – A 24-hour pledge by American broadcasters to refrain from airing the Whoopi Goldberg vehicle, “Sister Act”.

Valentime’s Day – Allows the phonetically challenged to finally get it right. To be held on February 15th

The Great American “Gas-Out” - Out – A one-day reprieve from chain e-mails that urge us to hold a useless Great American Gas-Out.

World Closure Day – Had a personal tragedy to deal with? Or perhaps your boyfriend dumped you. Or maybe it was just an ugly incident with Martha down in Human Resources. Well, no matter what it is, you’ve got 24 hours to put it all behind you. To be held on June 27h

World “Sucker Punch” Day – Allows for the legal assault of anyone who still claims to need closure. To be held on June 28th

National “Now, What Did She Do, Again” Day – You know you’ve heard the name before, but you can never recall in what context. Was she an actress? A singer? Feminist? American patriot? August 1st - a day to sort out the national enigma that is Carrie Snodgrass.

National Is/Are Awareness Day – A day for all highly paid broadcast reporters and anchors to learn the correct singular/plural usage of the linking verbs is and are.

National “Headshots” Day – For those who have really been meaning to get work as a screen extra.

World Health Club Amnesty Day – We know you really had every intention of going to the gym, but now here’s your chance to get out of that contract.

National “Nothing is as Sure as Death and Tackiness” Day – To make the funeral-attending public aware that the phrase “Good to see you,” isn’t a very appropriate greeting while there is a corpse around.

International Open Borders Weekend – Always wanted to live in Rome? Paris? Sydney? Weehauken? Border guards everywhere will enjoy two days vacation while the rest of us scramble to find our place in the sun. Will the last rational American to leave please lock up the White House?

International Slap the Children Day – No, you can’t have a candy bar.

The Great American Pop-In – Go ahead, pop in. You don’t need to tell them you’re coming, just show up and stay for coffee. In fact, stay the whole night, but be sure to bring plenty of banal conversation and don’t forget the pictures from your last trip to Weehauken.

Regards,

SJ

Senator, you really should copyright this material. :)

Btw, I am waiting for the 1st Annual Tell Your Family Off Day.
It will be held on the individual's birthday to commemorate the misery your family has caused while pretending it is "for your own good". Let us call this a cheaper alternative to therapy and a nice system of "checks and balances" for future parents.
I can feel parents start to tremble as the words are spoken..

Festivus

As I recall, one of the traditons in Festivus for the Rest of Us was the Airing of Grievances. It's followed (or preceded?) by Feats of Strength.

Did you know that there has been a drastic rise in the number of people who celebrate Festivus! You can even buy a Festivus Pole online:)
About 5 years ago Ben and Jerry's ice cream made a flavor called Festivus. It was blueberry and strawberry ice cream swirled together with white chocolate coated crunches. I bought it one night, Hemingway Jones hosted this incredible party for the season premiere of "The Soprano's". Well, lets just say it was a very good time with great company, great food (you really must try Mr. Jones' homemade tiramisu, it's soooo good), and a lot to drink. It just so happens that there was a major blizzard taking place, so all work was cancelled the next day, which led to some excessive alcohol consumption. Anyway, my good friend Brett and I got a hankering for ice cream, it's a new england thing to eat ice cream when it's freezing out, and I got this Festivus stuff. Turns out the "white chocolate covered crunchies" were actually Pop Rocks. So I'm drunk and all the sudden my mouth is exploding and crackling and everybody's looking at me wondering how a person sound like they were chewing like a cow when they were eating such a soft food. Well, lets just say that the ice cream is as silly as the holiday. We all ate a lot of Festivus ice cream while it was still being made. I don't even think it was even very good, but each bite was loaded with pop rocks, and for some reason we thought that was funny:D

Jack, I think you should copyright that stuff, it's great!!:D

Mmmm.... I guess I misunderstood your post. Because with the last line I took it to mean that you had not lost someone close to you. To which I was referring the luck.

I can offer up proof that he sent it to me to host before anyone else, and that he came up with those ideas before anyone else. If he wanted to take those publishers to task, he would be more then welcome to ask me for his help.

By the way, Jack... folks have been asking about you. How have you been?
