Tonak Hückel "Jota" "Seal Velour", 57cm possibly 1953 based on the Paper Label. This Velour is interesting because it has a Hückel "Jota" "Seal Velour" Crown Patch and Tonak Sweatband and Paper Label. Based on the Paper Label markings It appears it was made for the Czech market. The Sweatband was badly damaged so I had to replace it. Also some dye seepage into the Band / Bow. I will also post this in the German - Austrian thread because the Hückel "Jota" "Seal Velour" marking.

Mr Disney - 1950s Wanderer Styling
Light Pecan Colored Felt
Rakish 4 7/8 front 4 inch back crown
3/4 Medium Brown Grosgrain Ribbon
2 1/2 brim with 3/16 binding
Caught sight of this Mr Disney in this beautiful color combo and Wanderer like styling and I threw in an offer immediately. After a quick counter offer this beauty was on its way. Aside from the colors the fabric reeding material used to attach the sweat on some the Disney hats of a certain age caught my eye. I don’t see it too often and not sure if I have another like that. The hat is in beautiful shape and after a good brushing to release a bunch of hidden dirt the only blemishes really are one small moth nibble on the rear of the crown and a bit of breakdown discoloration on the grosgrain ribbon and bind. Definitely character adding stuff. I believe Disney hats in this period were made by Lee and the Danbury manufacturing tag along with the shaping of the likely pressed in crease seem to fit that idea. Super happy with this Disney in look and fit… I expect it to get some wear.

Second homburg or diplomatique made in France arrived in the past days.
Quite rare to find a Gelot, even less so of this color. Dark gray with blue highlights.
The shape is the classic one of the "normal shaped" homburgs. Size 58 centimeters or 7 1/4 in the US.
The curled brims are 5 centimeters long, the ribbon, the same color as the felt, is 4 centimeters high and the crown, completely open is 13 centimeters.
The inside reminds me that the hat is almost a hundred years old and is perfect, a little less so on the outside where there are small imperfections that can easily be resolved.
The question is which hat manufacturer made this Gelot?
No information at inside the sweatban and the mystery continues....

Panama Hats Direct - Optimo Crease
Fine weave straw

Picked up this Optimo crease by Panama Hats Direct for less than a song. Needed a little bit of reshaping via sitting in the sun and a bit of steam. But I think it whipped up nicely. The straw weave is very fine… not quite as tight a weave as my finest. Weave count of course is not the only measure of quality.. you can see some tiny imperfections in the close up of the brim compared next to my vintage Muses Panama…. None the less this is one very nice hat. Not sure I love the orange colored hat band…. But these bands actually slip on and off… I checked out their website and they sell them. I might just order a few extras.

It is always difficult for some French brands to say with certainty whether they produced their own hats or were supplied by high-class subcontractors as in the explicit case of Sools which used the best brands on the market for its hats. Gelot produced some of his hats, others were outsourced to external companies. Production is too small, the vintage market is stingy with Gelot, and there are too many models and finishes to be totally autonomous. Gelot has always stood out for formal hats: bowler and top hats and elegant women's hats. Like some other French maisons, it had a high-class reputation which can be found in some examples that have come down to us, not in others that are of average production.

Fun little Towncraft came in today ( Maybe a Lee made?). Really nice soft fur felt. Snaps up and down nicely. Ribbon binding on edge. Cleaned up pretty quick... just a couple little character stains on the ribbon but not enough to keep it at home!

Ottmar Reich "Insuperable" "Asa", F.P. 6, Eng. 7 1/4, 59 cm, possibly earlier 1900s. This Kreissäge / Straw Boater is really interesting. It has a very Wide Black Band (8 cm, 3 5/32 inches) with a Pleated Bow paired with a Narrow Brim. The Bow has a Mother Pearl button. The Sweatband is made of very thin crosshatched textured leather that has hardened. The Liner Mark of an America Indian is really special. The American Indian was a common motif in late 19th Century and early 20th Century Germany. There is also a black Cord at the base of the Crown which is typical of the time. It's rare to find an old German Kreissäge in this size range especially one that is this unique. Ottmar Reich was originally a Straw Hat factory and in the 1920s started to also make Felt Hats.
The photo of the paper label was taken by the Seller and in the process he slightly damaged the Sweatband so I didn't want to take a risk of further damage trying to take a better one. The three size types are located at the bottom of the paper label.
There is another Ottmar Reich "Insuperable" that was found by back in 2009 which is from a later time period.
