Though Ingrid Bergman was my first answer to the question posed, Carole Landis has always been a personal favourite of mine. Great pics Carter! :eusa_clap

Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler. AKA Hedy Lamarr Not only could this unbelievably beautiful woman stop traffic, but she was smart as well.

I was always partial to Olivia De Havilland (not necessarily in Gone with the Wind, though ;) )

When I first started watching classic movies, Hedy Lamarr was my Ideal. It's no wonder I have self esteem issues. She was flawless.

Would Capucine meet the pre-1950 requirement? I know most of her career was a bit later but, most of the obvious choices, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Vivien Leigh, Louise Brooks, et al. have been mentioned. She was, perhaps, my second crush? After Fran Jeffries who's carreer did not begin until the mid- to late- sixties.

One actress that comes immediately to mind when speaking of great beauties is the Chinese silent film actress Ruan Lingyu (1910-1935):

You can read about this remarkable star, who died tragically young by suicide, at this fan website:

http://www.geocities.com/lingyuruan/engmain.html

In 1992 the great Hong Kong director Stanley Kwan made a heartbreakingly beautiful film about Ruan Lingyu, known in English as Actress and starring Maggie Cheung (a great beauty in her own right). In its full-length version (154 minutes), this is the greatest "biopic" I have ever seen, and a daringly sophisticated one, combining "straight" drama, excerpts from Ruan Lingyu's actual films, and documentary interviews.

What was it?

The make up?

The photographer?

The cinematography?

Or did the women of a bygone era just care about how they presented themselves? Hair done, make up applied, properly clothed.

You are quite right about Liz Taylor...

Since there were many, I'd say one of them was Liz Taylor during this era...
She was the only woman my father used to say he could leave my mother for...fat chance...they were happily married for nearly 50 years! But Liz deserves a photo on this thread and here it is.

All of the above. But mostly the last one. This world needs more women (well, people in general) who care about how they present themselves, carry themselves and treat other people.

Me? One of my all-time fave actresses has alays been Themla Todd. Especially in Horse Feathers and Monkey Business with the Marx Brothers. College widow, indeed! ;)

You can see both Thelma Todd and Una Merkel in 1931's pre-code pre-Bogart version of The Maltese Falcon.

So many beautiful photos!

Personally I could never single out one actress from this or later eras. There are just too many women, all beautiful in their own way.

I will say that I haven't seen Joan Crawford, Barbara Stanwyck or Claudette Colbert mentioned here. All were very attractive and terrific actresses who continued playing starring roles after they were well past their 'it' girl years. I always thought Colbert in particular was a truly fine actress.

Of course, Bette Davis had those eyes - and a really long career!!!

I agree, after looking at them the decision is next to impossible. But...If forced to pick just one, Ava Gardner.
