So, what EXACTLY are Shuron frames? Are they styled after vintage frames or are they actually the same frames that were made back in the day?

The frames are the same I believe. There are some red-white-blue combos I think are a recent idea. Their site says they've supplied movies for period props. Some of the womens' frames are not the most appealing but I seem to recall seeing them when I was a kid.

The Shuron website says they've been in business since the 1860s, and they introduced the first "Browline" (Plastic on top of the lenses, metal below) in 1947.

A vintage pair I got over Christmas. Unfortunately there was corrosion underneath the top plastic bit which warped it, so I'll keep looking.

My husband has been wearing Ronsir Zyl's for about a year now and just ordered his second pair so I decided to get my own. Shuron is a GREAT company to deal with and I can't say enough about the quality of their products. Hubby is very hard on his glasses and his one year old frames look as great as the new pair he just got.

I ended up choosing the Nusir Royale in pewter with silver chassis. Here I am trying on the frames before heading out to the eye doctor.

Probably for the best, anyway. They overwhelm your face. You've got the right shape and proportions to pull off the Ronsir, but that particular pair look less like eyeglasses and more like safety goggles you're wearing to protect yourself from flying particles.

My old wire frame Brook's Brothers are doing just fine for now. When I'm ready to invest in new frames, I'm definitely going to check out Shuron! I love the design you selected, but I'd also like to try the Nulady cateye style too. You know, to bring out the naughty school teacher in me!

I have four pairs of Ronsir Zyls (two lensed up, two awaiting the funds to be lensed up) I bought direct from Shuron last year. To buy them here in the Uk would have cost GBP85 odds per pair for frames alone; buying direct from Shuron in the US pushed it down to only about GBP55 per pair. Really cracking stuff - probably better quality frames than anything else I've had before (glasses earer since 1984). GREAT company to deal with; they sent me five pairs, having only charged me for one, to try to gauge the correct size, really really helpful at every step of the way. Although I elected to have it done locally, they also have a full lab and can supply your glasses fully lensed. Highly recommended.

Just ordered the Ronsirs. I'm having 5 or 6 trial pairs sent for sizing. They'll be here on Mon., and I'm having them put Rx sunglass lenses in. The color of the frames are tortoiseshell, and now I'm debating the lens color (green, brown, or grey? Any opinions?), and material (poly, or real glass? Any opinions?). Tony R. is amazing; very kind, knowledgeable, and prompt with his responses.

Sidewinders are my choice.

Started looking at a pair from Tom Ford, but went back to the roots.
(And the TF pair was very small too - edit: And bloody expensive!!!)

Now I only have to decide - black or tortoise?[huh] I think black!!!!

The black has that somewhat more classic late fifties / early sixties Get Carter look that I'm sure I've read you post about in the past.... Would be worth trying both on, though, to be sure, as black frames are always more 'severe'. One of the reasons I'm such a big fan of the Ronsir / 'browline' style is that the lighter/finer metal bottom half makes them a bit less 'dominant' on my face, if you follow me. I can carry off a black in the Ronsir in a way that I think I would find much harder in a frame like the one you post, save if I was shooting for a very specific 50s look....

Another alternative you might consider is a black frame like this but where the bottom half of the lens surround bit is clear rather than black - this can work better on some folks than all black. Don't recall the model name, but Shuron do do that.

One thing to thinkabout in practicality terms.... unlike metal frames (including the Ronsir), an all-plastic frame is heated and stretched to allow the lens to be put in, then as it cools it 'shrinks to fit', as it were. For this reason, many opticians will only agree to re-lens once (i.e. a second set of lenses after the original prescription). If you want to change your look every few years (I find the most often I've ever had to change lenses was every two years), it's not an issue, but if you are inclined to find a style of glasses that suits you and stick with those long term, it might be worth thinking about.

For my prescription glasses, I've always preferred photochromic rather than a permanent tint, so my choice has been limited to brown or black. All three are period correct, I believe. If memory serves, Ray Bans were predominantly green right up to at least the Sixties, while I own a pair of fifties American Optical sunglasses in the browline style that have brown lenses (with tortoiseshell). Not sure about Shuron, but Im' sure tony could give you a lead on that....

With regards to poly or glass lenses.... if you're being picky, glass is period accurate, however, unless someone actually handles your glasses and thinks to check the lenses, it'll never be noticed. I go poly myself - originally this was because, after sticking with glass for years, opticians started offering photochromics in poly as opposed to glass only, and most of them stopped doing glass lenses altogether. Modern plastic lenses are much lighter to wear all day. They can scratch eaiser, but anti-scratch treatments are now common, and if you tend to take reasonable care of your specs anyhow, it's not an issue. The big bonus is that, if dropped, they tend to bounce - I well remember once or twice at school dropping glass lenses only to have them shatter immediately on impact!

Can't remember Michael Caine wearing glasses in "Get Carter" but he sure did in "Ipcress File". And that's right - I have been after that type for ages. Actually - I think I read somewhere - they were not black at all, but dark tortoise. Only looked black on the screen.
But - anyway - I did the only sensible thing: Bought two pairs. One black for everyday use and one Amber/tortois for summeruse (with sunglasses)
And I must say, I am impressed with their service.

The amber/tortoise ones are going to be made into sunglasses.
