Am i vintage hair-disadvantaged because i have bangs?

Hey all

I have bettie bangs right now, but not a really exaggerated u shape as ive never had the guts to go that far really...

basically after a few times of setting my hair, ive tried all the way up to my head and also half way up with pin curls and pillow rollers, the first time i stopped brushing too soon as i panicked and it was before i found the FL, this week it was just too curly? not sure if that makes sense?

im trying to go for waves but it just will not brush out to waves until 3 days later and by that time my roots are greasy...

anywho, i feel like im very restricted with my fringe, i love it, but i would also love to finger wave, have the front roll things (not to sure what theyre called yet!) and the other cute styles like a peeka boo wave etc...

normally when i try o do vintage hair i end up with two victory rolls, one on either side and then the rest sort of curled like this:

id really appreciate any advice on what im doing wrong, and well generally whether i would find more versatility from growing out my bangs?

To do more victory rolls and styles like that you will need to grow out your fringe. There are two styles in Lauren Rennell's Vintage Hairstyling book specifically for girls with Betty Bangs/Fringe.

also check LisaFreemontStreet on youtube - she has tons of wonderful tutorials you can try as you grow out your fringe. Using hair flowers, snoods and hats are a great way to disguise hair that's growing out.

I'm not sure I understand your question about "too curly." Do you use a setting lotion? It will give your curl more staying power. if your hair is too curly for your tastes try a larger roller/pin curl. You've already learned that you have to brush past the crazy frizzy part and you'll end up with curls - keep brushing longer and you'll end up with waves.

If your roots get greasy make sure you use a boar bristle brush to help scalp oils move down the hair shaft between shampoos. I wash my hair once a week, but I know some people with oily scalps need to wash more often. I hope this helps!

arghh i hate growing out my fringe, i always get so far then relent and cut it off again!

i wonder what i could do with it now? sort of a reverse roll rather than rolled under like one pic in that 50s link? hmmm...:eusa_doh:

You can do almost any style with bangs, including victory rolls and finger waves. Having longer fringe will give you a bit more versatility though.

You can push your bangs to the side and fingerwave them just fine. They should blend in with the rest of your hair. This is what I'm currently doing, but my bangs have grown out quite a bit.

You can curl your bangs under with an iron and spread them out into a "U" shape giving the illusion of a rat. You can then do your Victory rolls with this style.

Leave them as they are, pincurl the rest of your hair, and then tie it up with a ribbon.

Or just be "vintage" as you are. There's no rule book on how to do it "right."

I don't have bangs and am finding it difficult to do some of the styles I want. I'm actually thinking of putting in some bangs...

What length do you ladies sport? To your eye line? lower?

And Paula, I love BP bangs I had them myself for awhile!

Bangs are soo cool.
I always grow them out and then always cut them short again, so it is a never ending story for me, but I think with a little fantasy you could do a lot even with bangs

Paula honey, I am growing out Betty Bangs too and the center is down to my nose when wet. I am finding more versatility with longer bangs. EVEN THO I LOVE BETTY BANGS! I know what you mean about relenting and then just getting them cut again!
Another thing that worked for me was to do a center part and pincurl each side of the part, then pin back the sides. It's really cute! It does take a fair amount of hairspray lol

I have been longing for a betty bang for years...But I have a small forehead and full round cheeks...
Hairdressers never wanted to try because of my face shape and hair type and...and...
This week-end I was making my usual home made hair cut and...well...here it is :

Betty Bang 1.0

The shape should be far more better (reversed U shape was not the final goal...)
The thickness is ok for me (I partially lost my hair 3 years ago ans it is slowly growing up => no density and halo of small air around my head)

Edit : Few hours laters... My boy saw me, laughed and said I was more a Mireille Mathieu than a Betty Page.
(Mireille Mathieu is a traditionnal french singer, known for singing very old style and rolling"R" and for her famous, timeless bowl haircut. Being compared to her is not cool, at all)
Then he realised his mistake and added that I was an adventurous, surprising and funny woman and that made him love me every day more...nice try, isn't it ?

Maybe hairdressers were right...

I think the bang looks fine on you but maybe the execution is a little off... I mean it was your first try right? And since you are growing hair back it's not going to be as heavy as it ought. Anyway I thinks it's cute and flatters your face very nicely.

Gah! This thread further makes me want to cut short bangs! But I have a really damaged bleached streak in the front a la Miss hayworth:

so i know it will be a disaster if i attempt to do this.

Paula- if you decide to grow out your bangs and then miss them, you can always create a faux bang with a hair rat! That way you have the best of both worlds
