I use steam to shape wool hats all the time. It isn't necessary to get the hat wet so it cools and dries very quickly without shrinkage. I always work on small sections at a time.
I find that it is often necessary to work the brim sides a bit to keep the front and back dips from rising. I...
I agree that the light grays are more versitile than dark brown. Whether dark brown or black would depend upon what is in the wardrobe.
But for pure versitility, I'll grab Silver Belly every time.
If I can only take one it is my Dobbs Westward OR clone. It is a very light neutral color that can go with just about anything. It is also tough; it has been rained on, snowed on, sweated on, sat on (not by me) and is still going strong. I wear it year 'round.
Not such a bad selling strategy. If they are lucky enough to get two (or more) bidders who don't know what they are bidding on it is unlikely they would get any complaints.
I no longer bother attempting to educate those who over-fluff their descriptions or the buyers who think they have...
Sounds like you have a long oval (or maybe extra long oval) head. That could be throwing off your measurement.
I found that when I measured my long oval head (with or without help) it was coming out bigger than it should have. Most of the "how to measure" instructions say to take the...
Not an easy question to answer. I have a Royal Deluxe Stetson (most likely rabbit fur) fedora that I removed the binding from and the brim is now quite limp and a bit wavy, refusing to take any shape at all. I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do with it. It looks like Jed Clampett's hat now...
I loved the little note "don't put fingers on crown handle front + back of brim"
Gotta believe the original owner had some darker colored hats with finger marks on the crown!
Too bad it is so tiny.
We had a thread going a while ago to define exactly what a fedora is.
The short answer is: If you think it is a fedora then it is a fedora. Others' opinions may vary.
Because he's the seller. Fluffery, Puffery or just plain BS - if you're buying a hat you really need to know what you are looking at. Seller's descriptions shouldn't be considered reliable.
Caveat Emptor.
Not real tough if you use steam. You have to punch out the crease and use steam to get rid of all of the "folds" (you'll see them and know what I mean) then proceed to give it the desired crease - again using steam to encourage the hat to do what you want.
The key is to completely get rid of...
In the areas of collecting that have commonly used descriptive terms, there is no allowance made for age. The age allowance comes in when determining value. Things that are rarely seen in any condition have value even when in poor condition. Things are commonly available in better condition...
