I think Akubra deserves kudos for actually telling folks just how much beaver fur is in that hat.
For those who would like to see Akubra make fedoras with beaver fur, may I suggest you gang up and ask them to do so? The hats would most likely be more expensive than the Heritage models and...
As noted by a few, "perfect" means flawless - absolutely nothing at all wrong with it and everything exactly the way it should be.
Even a brand new hat made by the best hatmakers today is unlikely to be "perfect."
IMO, "perfect" is an even more worthless description than "good for its age."
If it happens, this will be a trend that passes me by. I have one bowler (a nearly mint 1930 Stetson) and it fits perfectly. But I do not look good wearing it - or it doesn't look good wearing me.
I think you are giving too much credit to the material and not enough to the hatmakers. Imagine what the Austrian hatmakers could have done with the finer, softer beaver fur if it had been available to them.
That would be the "OIL-PROTECTO" feature of the Cushion Comfort Sweat Band. Keeps the sweat and oil from transferring from the sweatband to the felt.
Byer-Rolnick patented something like that in 1939 if I recall correctly.
I don't see anything screwy.
A. 15:49:55 $80.59 - high bidder
B. 15:57:22 $120.91 - new high bidder
C. 15:58:02 $88.55 - B still high bidder
D. 15:58:05 $115.99 - B still high bidder
E. 15.58:05 $123.41 - new high bidder
15:58:08 - auction end
Actually only partially wrong. Some custom western hatmakers today do use a 3x = 30%, 5x = 50% system but since there is no set system it varies.
Stetson won't even say what the x's mean.
In order to make a hat with beaver fur you need beavers. Not a whole lot of beavers in Europe in the early to mid 1900s so Borsalino would have needed to import beaver fur from the US. Probably expensive when even possible.
I've seen several vintage long-hair and velour beaver hats and they...
Extremely common, particularly among the middle-aged and older men. There was a time when the brim up all around was considered more conservative.
I doubt that photo was posed or staged or modern. If a photographer was staging the photo he would have the model remove his coat and would get...
There are lots of "rules" that in my opinion should be ignored if it works for you.
A lot of discussion here about whether one can "pull it off." If you like the look you don't have to "pull if off."
I wear light gray with just about anything. Same with light tan. Since the hats don't have a strong color component they seem to sort of just blend in with whatever I'm wearing, it is hard to tell what color the hat really is. The medium and darker shades don't seem to be as versitile.
