I do think prices have got higher - but I also think some of that is to do with the fact that vintage is so fashionable at the moment. And if you're the sort of young lady who hasn't a problem spending well over $100 on new shoes, then vintage ones seem cheap by comparison. Vintage stuff is so...
Oh, lovely ones here already but Magneto has such a good points about some of the silent stars. I watched (they made me) a whole load of Harold Lloyd silents and was struck by Bebe Daniels. She was feisty. Don't think much of the one Lloyd married (insipid).
I'm sure you'll love it. One woman recounts how she used to get the underground straight from her factory job to drinks at the Ritz then dancing at the 400 club -- all in her brown factory overalls.
Also some extraordinary accounts of just how little these young women knew about, ahem...
If anyone wants to know about finishing school I highly recommend Debs At War. It's one of the best books I've read in ages - all about what upper class young women got up to during WWII.
It also gives lots of info on being a Debutante and finishing school etc (half of them were still being...
Knit dresses - they have some nice modern ones - very vintage in style - in Noa Noa at the moment in the UK... expensive, though - about £90. They come with a matching belt and slip though... which I suppose makes it slightly better value. Gorgeous colours - dark teal, lovely green etc...
Nooooo... you've brought it all back. I went out the weekend before last wearing my favourite pair of 1930s silver dancing shoes with rhinestone buckles... They were beautifully comfortable as ever all evening... drinks at the Savoy, dinner, dancing...
And then on the way down the stairs to...
er, well, last time we did a 30s event I played my Great Aunt Barbara, who was in her 20s in the 1930s. But it does tend to vary. The name Tottie is just a nickname.
I should add, I don't stay in role just for the hell of it... only when paying public are there!
well, I've come here a bit late too, I think! But anyway, I'm new so I'll say hello. In real life I'm a TV director in the UK.
I've been doing what they call 'living history' since I was 13, making my own 16th century clothes etc, so I've always loved dressing up. I got into more modern...
hey, I'm just thinking, if you really are going to have your hair buzz-cut, IlsaLund, why don't you also get people to sponsor you - that way you could make some money for Charity too!
I think it would suit you, by the way.
Mind you, my hairdressing disaster when I was about 12 was when...
Well, they (you all) *do* look good. So nice to see them in all their finery. Us girls can look pretty any time - these days, it's probably more difficult for a chap to dress up and look smart without being made to feel a fool.
We were trying to find somewhere in London last weekend where a...
Charlie Chaplin...
ooh, yes, such lovely hair. No wonder all the ladies swooned over him. Buster Keaton was quite cute too... but not when you put them side by side (which I did purely for research purposes, you understand)
oh, and, er, sorry to post 3-in-a-row, but Jitterbugdoll, if you do find them in Target, let me know. My brother lives in Texas, and seems to spend a lot of time in Target, so I'm sure I can get him to send me some.... ooh, excited now!
Ooh yes I HATE it when things that are wonderful get discontinued... and if I was organized, I would stockpile things too. It's not crazy at all! Plus, doing that, you increase the chance that vintage packaging collectors will have stuff to find in your attic in 100 years time!
Sis, hey, why...
yes, it seems to be something about the strength of them - they are really just stronger. If they made them like that and crimped I wouldn't mind...
Actually I once had my hair done as an extra for an advert and the woman had these amazing grips which loooked like normal ones but slightly...
For years I have used the world's greatest bobby pins (that's kirby grips to us Brits) which came from a Japanese chain called Muji. They were these fantastic Japanese grips made of steel (they rust - no painted coating - just steel like the old-fashioned ones) - designed for super-straight...
