Based on the clothes or the background, around what year do you think this photo was taken? For reference my grandfather (man on right) was born in 1920.
What was their view of them?
Asking because I’ve seen a photo of my step grandpa (b. 1917-1998) wearing a brown leather jacket in the early 90s and it surprised me. He’s the only one of that generation I’ve seen wearing one in a social situation.
The following pictures were taken in 1972 and the 1950s respectively
Are the jackets worn examples of Ricky jackets - or just windbreakers?
What separated a Ricky from a windbreaker?
And was there a particular “aesthetic” or fashion element that Ricky jackets belonged to?
Hi,
Back in the 90s my parents had a bedroom set that to me looks like it could've been from The Golden Era. The pieces were bought sometime before my birth in 1990, because they were already part of our household before I was alive. Over the years they were either thrown out or given away. I...
This photo depicts my grandfather (man on the right) with his first wife's family. They were together between 1945 and her death in 1947. However, my mother thinks it may be later. I will post pictures of my grandfather in 1945 and 1948 and 1949 later for comparison, but to help, he was born in...
I've been reading this book, it was written in the 70s but it primarily set between the mid 1940s and late 1960s, and in the late 40s through early 60s the guy describes guys wearing shirts with 'roll collars', what are those exactly?
So I came across this photo of Elvis Presley, taken in 1946
If you didn't know the photo was of Elvis or that it was taken in 1946 you'd swear by the collar it was taken in 1976 instead.
So my question is, were wide collars such as Elvis' there common in the 1940s or was he just way ahead of...
1. John Wayne on Clark Gable: “Gable’s an idiot. You know why he’s an actor? It’s the only thing he’s smart enough to do.”
2. Tallulah Bankhead on Bette Davis: “Don’t think I don’t know who’s been spreading gossip about me. After all the nice things I’ve said about that hag. When I get hold of...
I usually run a large in shirts. I have a 15.5" neck, and was judged by a tailor to be medium in a dress shirt, and a waist between 32 and 34 inches. My question is, I was looking at a microfiber golf/windbreaker jacket for the spring, and it looks nice and is a good price....Only problem is...
Hi,
I discovered among my late grandfather's collection two postcards from the "Series 18 Roller Derby". One of Gerry Murray, the other of Helen Gardner. I am curious - I have been looking everywhere online and cannot find what year Series 18 was, for one - so any help there would be recommend...
The pictures date between 1949 and 1951. Based on the time period, what likely color pattern was it? Has anyone seen any jackets like it, and if so, where could I find one?
These are all from my mother's side of the family.

I'm just wondering, because stylistically it seems today windbreakers are inspired by both the Tanker and Ricky jacket of the 40s and 50s. Is there any real difference between a '50s Ricky, and a modern Carhartt jacket?
In the 1940s, my great grandfather owned a house that apparently was site of the 81st or 84thAD Republican Party as of 1945....It doesn't come up on the 1940 census, but here it is in a 1945-1946 era photo:
My mother grew up from 1954-1961 in that house...with the pillars. I am curious, with...
You never really see modern day shows or films that showcase the period from just after WWII ended, to just before the beginnings of the Rock N' Roll era. It seems to be generally a forgotten era - from the birth of the Cold War, to the cold winters of Korea -
In popular memory, it doesn't seem...
