Sears might be going belly up

How can someone write an entire article about Sears oldest store and not mention what year it opened? I had to look it up elsewhere. It's 1925 by the way.

Love the concept. I hope you are keeping a close eye on matching the light source angle for the models and the added celestial objects.

What pens are we carrying today?

I'm carrying a mid 1930s Conklin Nozak Word Gauge. Found it at an estate sale this morning (for $5). I cleaned it up and to my great delight the filling mechanism works flawlessly.

    Vintage Phones

There is no reason a bundled modem system should prevent rotaries from calling out. That's what kind of system I have and it works fine. However, the equipment to read pulses is further upstream and if your phone company has removed it then you won't be able to call out.

    Boater faction!

Got my first boater, there is no liner so I don't know the brand. Not sure how old it is, just that its post 1934 based on the union label. Any idea when hats like this sold for 3.95? (assuming this is the original sweatband)

Got my candlestick hooked up to the subset and mounted to the wall. This makes 8 rotary phones that are hooked up and working in my house. (I have plans for 3 more)

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

There's a bunch of working phonebooths (yes, booths) at Yellowstone national park. Both built in and freestanding outside. You can thank spotty cell service for that.

    How old is your house?

We're in a 1922 Craftsman style double shotgun. It's been (mostly) converted into a single. We're about to start a round of renovations to finish/fix what the last owners started.

I'm aware you are supposed to replace all the capacitors first, but my curiosity got the better of me. I'll be replacing them in due course. After doing some research I suspect it was made by Detrola for another company.

picked this one up today. It was filthy. I gave it a once over when I got home then cautiously plugged it in. It actually works. Needs some adjusting though. Here it is all cleaned up. Anybody recognize the model? I can't figure it out, there is no company name anywhere on it.

In your parts bin. I had an extra chrome handset I used as a donor. I don't know of anyone who sells them.

    Vintage Phones

Well I finally managed to get an AE34. here's what I looked like when I got it. At some point in it's history, the dial was removed and a blank put on. How do I know this? well for one thing the dial blank is from Northern Electric. Also the wires added inside when the conversion took...
