    The Other Open Roads.....

You are not alone in that. Most people here don't seem to like Open Roads either. They change the crease and turn then into Stratoliner clones.

Ask a question, get an answer

In my opinion the skill and effort of the people involved with crafting the hat are far more important than the base material (fur). I have numerous hats of both rabbit and beaver. Those of rabbit are no less pleasurable to hold, no less attractive, and no less functional than those of beaver...

Ask a question, get an answer

No. Beaver felt is a luxury upgrade of no discernable benefit other than the feeling of having a "better" (aka more expensive) hat.

Vintage finds: update and wear them or leave them be?

If the hats are the kind that are prized as collectibles, then any noticible changes/fixes will generally degrade the value. Other than that, do what you want to make them wearable/enjoyable.

    The Other Open Roads.....

Open Road was just a Stetson brand name so there will be variations in style based on the year of manufacture. The traditional Open Road is a western styled soft felt fedora with a thin ribbon & edge binding. They usually start their life with a cattlemen's crease. A clone of an Open Road is a...

    The Other Open Roads.....

Spent several hours last weekend traveling around to a number of antique malls and didn't find even one decent hat. This weekend, I went to the local indoor flea (trash) market and came away with this near perfect Open Road clone for $3.00. From what I can find, the maker is Charles Levy & Sons...

    Post New Hats Here!

To answer the various questions and comments; They are all my size except for the Whippet which is a size 7. It was good fortune that nearly every decent hat I found was in a size I could wear. I passed on an Open Road in my size as I have enough of that style. The only exception were two size...

    The School of Hard Knox

Moveo et Proficio was Knox's motto but its use was not limited to Knox. Crofut & Knapp also used that motto for one. I would guess that hat is probably an unbranded Hat Corporation of America (or maybe Lee) product supplied to the department store so they could brand it as their own.

Adventurebilt hats status update (read if you have an outstanding order)

As I have said before, anyone who has been waiting years for a hat from Adventurebilt needs to let it go already. It is an unfortunate situation and there is nothing that can be done about it. If you can't muster the good will to write it off as a charitable donation to a man who illness took...

Stetson late '50s or early '60s employee retirement presentation piece with very weird attributes

Would you really give a life long hatter a hat as a retirement present? That would be the last thing they'd need. I'm sure it was meant as a gag gift.

How do folks react to your hat wearing?

I was out in my Carl Kolchak look at a Halloween bar bash last night. While doing my thing out on the dance floor, a woman comes up to me and puts her arm around me and says "I walked all the way over here just to tell you that you are by far the coolest mother $&*#er in this place".

    Designing Stetson

She is the CEO of Stetson Worldwide. Her job is to promote the brand name and sell licenses. I seriously doubt she or anyone else at her company has any input on the "Stetson" hats made by Hatco, despite what she said.

Just bought a Knox fedora from a charity shop. Can anyone give me more info about it?

The original Knox company ceased to exist in the 1930's when it was merged into what became the Hat Corporation of America and eventually Hatco. So technically the Knox brand still exists today but it is little used since the Stetson brand name carries more wow factor.
