Fort Washita has hosted living history groups from many periods; most weekends of the year there is a group out there. My Civil War group has held an event there on the second weekend of December for over 12 years; I know...
I won this on ebay and it doesn't fit me. :( My loss, your gain! These are the original seller's pictures; they're excellent, and much better than I can do without a mannequin. Except for the shot with the collar flipped up. It's supposed to be down, of course!
I'm pretty sure...
Introducing a dual-duty addition to my room!
I have an instinct for space efficiency. I'm good at packing huge amounts of gear into small vehicles, and there is no wasted space in my room or closet. When there's no place to put a laptop, I just have to think harder.
The previous layout for...
The Victoria & Albert Museum has free wartime knitting patterns available for download on the website, as part of an online exhibit on knitting.
1940s Patterns to Knit
Don't miss important needle size and yarn weight information at the bottom of the first page.
I don't travel much, and when I do I tend to drive. I'm paranoid about setting off metal detectors! But here's the deal: I wear vintage most days. Soon I'll be taking a short business trip, leaving from work on the way out. If I wear my regular work clothes, as I'd really rather, I'll have 8-12...
Disclaimer - None of the following items actually belong to me; they're my parents' (or my brothers'). But I thought I'd snap some pictures and share.
Lindeman & Sons baby grand piano.
My father bought it for my mother from a newspaper ad, pretty soon after they were married (1979)...
... but I'd like to know for sure. I read up on all the "man purse" threads last week and finally sprung for this:
I'm in grad school and have been making do with a map/document/something bag I picked up at an antique mall a number of years ago. I've needed something bigger for some...
From the choir loft this morning, while the orchestra was playing the prelude, I amused myself by counting the number of women wearing corsages. My mother's always worn one on Mother's Day, and I've grown to expect them. To my surprise, I saw a grand total of THREE, not counting the two in the...
This winter, I had a pretty good wardrobe of dresses, shirts, and three hard-working skirts. These skirts were all of wool: One heathered gray a-line, one brown tweedy bias, and one black crepe pencil. These are great neutrals that go with a lot of my shirts. In Texas, though, warm weather...
Yesterday I was reading Sayers' essay "Are Women Human?" and came across this wonderfully witty passage. Miss Sayers is not so much discussing wardrobe as making a point, but it's a delightful read.
From an address given in 1938:
I'm really not intending to re-ignite any discussion about...
It's my turn to pass on the "Ebay fitting woes" mistakes I've had! First up, this black rayon crepe skirt:
It's got eight gores and fastens on the left side with a hook and eye and a snap. The rayon crepe is pretty stretchy, but this IS a small size skirt. I was so disappointed! It's a...
These perfectly adorable shoes are my biggest ebay disappointment in several months. I bought them based on the insole length. Big lesson: If the shoes actually have a size on them, and it's smaller than the length indicates, they're not going to work for a larger size!
I have...
Daisy's new blackbird alphabet dress has been featured on the A Dress A Day blog!
A Day Late, More Than A Few Dollars Short
"I have absolutely put these pics in my file labeled 'For the Glorious Day When I Have My Own Fabric Mill,' because I really want blackbird-alphabet fabric. I also...
I won this 1930s open knit set, which arrived in the mail yesterday:
I'm planning on wearing it for Easter. When I tried it on, over my girdle and ivory-colored full slip, I had a LOT of show-through. Far too much to be acceptable. The girdle was the worst; the line of it...
I'm just full of questions this week. Or, well... I'm putting off studying for my midterm. :p
There are a couple good threads here on vintage and vintage-style sunglasses, and I feel I have a decent grasp now on what men's glasses look like. But what about women's, from the 1930s and...
I was in our Hancock's today, since they've just announced they'll be closing :( and I wanted to scope out the beginning sales. There were a few colorful cotton prints that caught my eye. Most of them had a 60s-ish feel, although not terribly so, but one instantly made me think of a 1930s...
I've got a dilemma.
My current bag is a plain, soft leather bag from Naturalizer. I love it because (1) it's a handbag, (2) it has two handles so it doesn't fall open when it's not fastened, (3) it holds a lot of stuff but doesn't look big. The only problem? It's black.
Warm weather...
I have a brother who has been wanting a vintage suit for some time. Since I know more about clothing of the period than he, I've been lurking here and haunting ebay to watch and learn. But it's to the point where I need advice. He specifically desires something from the 1930s-early 1940s...
To be precise, three pairs of shoes (two vintage, one vintage-style) and one new pair of Magnolia FF stockings in the package.
EDIT: Also a 1950s green rough silk dress.
Brown leather vintage-style oxfords, size 9
Black leather pumps with decorative punching and detailing, size 8-9 narrow...
The discussion on police uniforms reminded me of my favorite modern uniforms - favorite because of their Golden Era flavor:
The Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets
Summer Bravos (B's) are the uniforms most often seen on campus at ordinary times. This young man is a freshman...
