Golden Age experience in Los Angeles?

Where does one go today, other than Long Beach and the QM to 'experience' a bit of the Golden Age in Los Angeles? There's Musso & Frank's, and the Pig 'n' Whistle, all Grauman's theatres and such on Hollywood Boulevard, but what else is there? What's a 'must see'/do list for a visitor with...

Have any of you considered kit cars? Seems like a pretty affordable alternative.

I haven't seen this posted here, so I thought I'd direct your attention to this: Vintage Vending.com The telephones are especially interesting.

    Golden Age screensavers?

Anyone have any leads toward a Golden Age themed screensaver for a PC? There used to be one with Windows 98 Themes, but I don't know where I'd find something like that now. Thanks in advance!

    Humidors

Could one keep pipe tobacco in a humidor? Would there be a point to that? I have a brand new humidor and I'm apparantly not a 'cigar guy', but I might be a pipe guy. Not sure yet.

    How vintage are you?

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=1523361978 Obviously, the people who made this video don't have a clue about what vintage is, but it's funny nonetheless.

Prices of everyday things in the Golden Era

Does anyone know what groceries and meals cost back then? Does anyone have any photos of diner boards of fare? What did a Coke cost? What about a bottle of whiskey? A newspaper? A shoe shine? A cup of coffee? A plane ticket to Marrakech? Flashlight batteries? A ticket to the pictures...

    Is a Trilby a fedora?

My grandfather wore hats, but being British, he called them Trilbys. He wore the super wide brimmed type with his zoot suit around war time, and later, wore a short brimmed one in the 1950's and 60's. They look like fedoras to me. Is there a difference?

This is the bee's knees! Newspaper Archive!

Let's pretend your birthday is June 20, 1939. Enter that, and you get THIS. That would be a pretty cool keepsake or film prop, et cetera. I found it while trying to find out what the heck a 'metabolism machine' is/was.

    Car park

Did everyone angle park their cars nose into the curb back in the Golden Age, or did they park end-to-end side-to-curb as we do now? Was there a combination of these? Any photo examples?

    Fedora Loungers on MySpace

There is a Fedora Lounge Group on MySpace, but a lot of faces here that aren't there. Who's got a MySpace? I've had one for years, but I'm just starting to find and add you folks. http://www.myspace.com/mistersable There was a thread about this last year, but it got locked (I'm not...

    Wanted: Pre-War 2 piece suit, 38-40R, 34 waist

It could be WWII era too, I suppose. Anyone got one that size in decent condition that they're willing to part with? Not real fussy on colour, nor whether it's double breasted or not. As long as the fabric pattern won't 'strobe' on video, it's cool. Thanks in advance.

    "The Public Eye"

Anyone see this Joe Pesci/Barbara Hersey movie? I saw it when it came out, but I bought a copy of it the other day. It seems perfectly cast with Pesci as a very thinly disguised Arthur "Weegee" Felig, Golden Age photographer. It's very true to Weegee's life and story, but takes some major...

    Nice score, a new Akubra!

I just picked up a new Akubra 'Epsom' (?? - it says 'Epsom' on the front of the sweatband) in a light fawn colour from a truckstop at midnight for $26.00 Canadian! woooo! It was in amongst a bunch of half price cowboy hats, so it was half price as well. It doesn't look like a single one of...

    Flatfoots (Flatfeet?)

Does anyone have a photo of what pre-WWII police uniforms looked like? Most PD's had the 5 pointed peak cap, didn't they? I can't find jack about this on the old inter-web.

    Poseurs and Bandwagoners

In a two page fluff piece spread in a national Canadian trying-way-too-hard-to-be-hip daily newspaper for those with no attention span (owned by Southam), it was announced that 'the fedora is making a big comback this summer'. It alluded to every durn type of fedora from teh stingy brim to the...

    Golden Era phone books

Does anyone here know what phone book looked like back in the Golden Era? How many numbers did people have to dial back then? Would anyone have any screen captures of an old 30's or 40's movie with someone using a payphone or phone book? Any visual telephone references would be appreciated...
