    fountain pen newbie

I agree with Nick D that the disposable pens are good for figuring out what sort of grip (and also what size nib, if you have choices there) works best with your style of writing. One thing they'll especially help you do, I've found, is learn to write more slowly and deliberately. If I'm taking...

    What are you listening to?

As it happens, since I just wandered into The Fedora Lounge after too long a time away, Koop Kooper's latest "Cocktail Nation" podcast.

Have You Ever Met A Movie/TV Star or Celebrity?

I've met a bunch of politicians here and there -- shook hands and chatted with George H.W. Bush at a private event a day or two after he won the nomination in 1988; had dinner with Andre Marrou (if being the Libertarian Party vice-presidential nominee counts as "celebrity"); ran into...

The Best Fiction About the Golden Era?

Lately I've been getting (back) into the early Saint stories by Leslie Charteris. It's somewhat OT since it's not fiction, but most of what I read is non-fiction and I recently enjoyed: Dream Lucky: When FDR was in the White House, Count Basie was on the radio, and everyone wore a hat... by...

    Golden Age New York City

A remarkable collection. I could get lost in some of those images. Thank you for pointing them out.

    Classic Style #5

Eureka! I have it! Just back from my local B&N where number 5 finally showed up, and I have my copy. Now to hide myself in a conference room for the rest of the afternoon so I can enjoy it in peace. I also made a point of buying several other things (I was wanting anyway), to reward them with...

    What Are You Reading

My mother gave me and my wife a copy each of The Shack. It's on my pile of books to get to. I just knocked off Newt Gingrich's new alternative-history World War II book Days of Infamy. Decent read for a weekend if you like popular war fiction. I have a few things I pre-ordered from Amazon...

    Classic Style #5

Thank you for the update, MK. I'm sure the staff at my local Borders and B&N stores will be glad to have me lay off my obsessive search of their magazine racks for the next couple of weeks.

    Agatha Christie's "Poirot"

Based on the rave reviews on this thread, I've just requested a number of the David Suchet Poirot books-on-CD from my local library. Thank you for the recommendations!

Be careful who you hand your hat to

My Akubra is still only a couple of months old, so it hasn't (yet) suffered the sorts of indignities you all have been describing. Thank you for the warning. I'll continue to keep it on a short leash. As I've been reading this thread, I couldn't help but hum Lyle Lovett... Man you better...

    Perry Como Fans

I was just listening to this song and checking out the lyrics online, and here it led me right back to my new hangout, the Fedora Lounge. I do have one nitpick with the lyrics above, though, as they show up on all the usual lyrics sites. I believe the second line is "I'm the Gravel Gertie of...

Yes, the hat's pretty sharp. I like his glasses, too.

    P-38s in ETO

I think for one thing, the Lightning was used in greater numbers in the Pacific, where its long range relative to other fighters was better suited for over-water operations (witness the Yamamoto mission). While the Zero was more maneuverable, the P-38 was faster and more heavily armed.

    Hats in latest Menswear magazine

I'm 40, and bought myself my first fedora (Akubra Sydney from the David Morgan brick-and-mortar store) a month or so ago.

    Travel Jackets Recommendations

I was going to recommend the LLBean travel jacket too, one of which has been seeing me through airports, and sometimes through the office, for about a year. Was going to, but I couldn't find it on their website, nor the similar one Lands End offered. There are also travel jackets at Duluth...

The Evidence of Old Lovers - Keep or Destroy?

At the risk of sounding like a prig on my very sixth post, I would think that if the lady asked you to destroy them, the thing to do would be to destroy them -- at least if you're sure she meant it seriously. Particularly since, as you say, you've remained friends with her over the years. It's...

Where did your user name come from??

This part of North America -- the northwestern US and western Canada -- is often called "the Cascadian region" or just Cascadia, and when I started imagining an independent nation, just as a thought experiment, I called it the Kingdom of Cascadia. After that, this or the variant "asr-cascadian"...

    '20s jacket

I'm no expert and so should probably refrain from making suggestions, but it strikes me as very Austrian or Bavarian in style.

    A fur felt fedora for $24.50 ???

But hey ... it's "dimensional." That certainly sets it apart from all the non-dimensional hats I have now.
