Molorom...read your post regarding your ebay puchase and looks like a similiar problem...I guess I have learned by my 1st experience not to overpay for a vintage because you might have to factor in $50-$60 for cleaning, reblocking, and shipping. Live and Learn :(
Just also wanted to "bump this...
Well I am now the owner of my first hat....purchased off of E-Bay(some of you may have looked at it)....It is a mid grayish Pilgrim teardrop crown 2 1/2 inch brim w/a thin gray ribbon(Open Road-like) and the same ribbon as edging on the brim...the crown is 4 3/8 in the front and 4 1/8 in the...
Well when I started this thread I had reservations and questions regarding this e-bayer and the exact "grade" of merchandise they carried......I read some of the early comments on this thread and elected NOT to buy...many of the hats are(were) being sold at a higher price than I expected based...
To me..as a businessman..."he" would have to be "paying" about $10 to $14(or less) each to make any profit and assume the risk of a low auction..many of his sales are $15 to $30....this has the look of something produced in China...or the look of something fishy....labor,felt cost and shipping...
There has been some discussion of this vendor in other threads...does anyone have any dealings with or knowledge of this "store"?...Are they "real" Stetsons? Some have said Stetson now only licenses the name and doesn't make the hat.....could these be of inferior quality?(I know to many of you...
So how low is too low(for the average person-not period correct)?...after you mentioned this I checked specs onthe Chatham...crown 3 3/4 ....seems a little low.....looked at millers fedoras made for them by Stetson....specs looked much better......anyone have any comment on the Miller's by...
Chatham or Temple
I too have been looking at the modern stetson....is there any quality difference between the Chatham and Temple? price varies a little...guess it is just trim style difference....have not seen these in the $20 to $45 price range from the usual list of vendors...would rather...
Was just wondering ...when you have purchased in the past or consider purchasing in the future a vintage hat....do you buy on the quality/name or the style?
In other words would you buy a great hat that is somewhat outside of your style preference? Or do you pass on it and just look for your...
Thanks Sharpetoys...I'll actually be in that general area of town....so it will be worth my while to stop in...coupon could come in handy...thanks again.

Open blocked crown vs pre-blocked crown?
How easy is it for someone(ME) with no hat experience to shape and style a hat that comes open crown? Wouldn't want to "mess-up" my first and only hat.
Can I get one pre-blocked to my specs? Or would I have to send it off to be blocked? What are the...
Is this vender still selling hats?
Tried to PM...his box is full...could be a good sign or badsign!
Any feedback from those who have purchased?

Many of you have given great advice to this hatless newbie......so I'll ask a couple more questions:
Not a which is better question...but which is more suited to me.
I am looking for a mid to dark grey,2 1/2 inch brim,C/teardrop crown around 4 1/2 inches high fedora...just a basic,40's...
Thanks for the info Sharpetoys.....Adventurebuilt seems to be a very good solution.....I didnt know about the discount...that helps....seems i could get a great quality custom hat for a very fair price not too much above my budget.
I don't wear skirts too often  but I really dont...
Will be in Philly in early October.....looking for a good hat shop for a newbie to visit, learn, and try on different styles and price ranges...mainly want to get professional advice on size and what looks best on me...anyone know of a place or salesperson I should see?
Thanks,
newhatguy
Thanks for the info
Why no US distributors for these popular styles(CEO,Fedora)?
Since I'm buying my 1st hat and not 100% sure size and style it seems unrealistic to pay about 1/3rd of the value of the hat in shipping only to find out its not right size,style,etc..for a size swap return...
Many of you have pointed me in this direction as a good choice for a quality 1st hat.....I went to the website...and found two styles I like--the Fedora and the CEO(both under fashion heading)....looked for US distributors...David Morgan and it's "sub distributors" do not list these hat...
Vintage is the direction I am leaning...mainly due to the lack of a quality nearby shop...would have to order anyway and if you have some info on vintage(aquired here) the quality is better than new.So the risk/return of a vintage ebay hat looks small.Cant return it if dosnt fit but can always...
Considering I do not yet own a hat...but am actively looking at my options for 1st purchase....what is your opinion regarding new vs vintage for a rookie?
What are the pros and cons? possible pitfalls? Budget for either would be $125 or less.
Thanks,
newhatguy

Thanks for the info.
