NC Hat Shops
Hate to say it, but... There are not very many around. In Charlotte, there is Alexander Hats on Independence Blvd., and Holloway's Mens Wear on North Tryon. Holloway's isn't a hat shop, but is a clothing store that caters to black men and does carry a nice selection of hats. -

Hat Storage
Hat rack in the foyer, shelves in three closets, hat boxes in two rooms and the garage. I, too, try to store correctly, but when I don't a little steam puts things right. -

Highest price paid, lowest price paid for your fedora.
Expensive/valuable... I think my most expensive hat was a midnight blue Knox "Tom 'n' Jerry," which I believe I paid about $130 for. That said, my most valuable hat would be my Knox 100 (which I paid $28 for). To this day I've not seen or heard of another. -

You think I should sell a few?
I see gaps... Sell them?!? How can you sell any of them when you're lacking so many to complete the collection. Heck, in my opinion, you're just getting started. Can't be more than another 1,000 or so before you're done. -

Size Advice Please - Vintage Hats on ebay
Consider the bigger picture... I found my hat-buying on ebay became a lot more rewarding when I came to understand size doesn't matter. Well, not literally, but not committing because the hat might not fit is a mistake. Out of my about-14-or-15 dozen auction hats, maybe 45-50% arrived as a good... -

Scout vs Bickmore products
Very pleased... The Scout dark hat cleaner is first rate. I've used multiple cans over time on numbers of hats. The light hat cleaner contains silicates that can leave a residue. Never used it and see no reason to since the dark hat cleaner works fine on any hat. I've done silverbelly hats and... -

Stetson Straw
I dunno... I think the difference is less about value/wallet size and more about the hat's size. Lids in the 6 7/8 to 7 range don't fetch nearly as much. -

Not much here, either... Welcome to the Lounge. Best hat site on the web, as you've already seen. I'm in Charlotte and there's precious little here. Best I've found are menswear stores that cater to African Americans. Holloway's on N. Tryon St and Freedom Dr. are most reliable. Other than that... -

Please help identify my Stetson
My guess is... I think this is a '70s, possibly late '60s lid. The liner's design and use of glue rather than stitches points in that direction, as do the black sweat and the tag typography. The "Stetson" pin could have been added later, but the ones I've had were on '70s and early '80s hats... -

How Do you Measure A Hat?
I measure... Brim width on the underside from the outer edge to the bead (or edge of sweat, lacking a bead). Some measure topside to edge of crown. Poll: When you see a fellow hatwearer...
"Nice hat" If it's any sort of stylish or proper lid, I tell him (or less frequently, her) "nice hat," accompanied by a tip o' the brim. I believe it is appreciated and furthers our sartorial mission of championing the wearing of fine hats. -

Basics of cleaning....
Before trying naptha... You might want to try Scout Dark Hat Cleaner. http://www.sheplers.com/hats/hat_accessories_care/101396.html It's an aerosol foam that I've had a lot of success with. Don't use the Light Hat Cleaner. It contains silicates that can damage your hat.
