According to Barbara Leaming's biography on Rita If This Was Happiness and TCM Film Guide's Leading Ladies, Rita wanted the electrolysis procedure. It took two years to complete, and made a subtle change that she truly felt was worth the trouble.

Personally, I think it was too - It really enhanced the shape of her face.

Ah! I have the answer to this! My Gramma told me about this. She was always bemoaning her small mouth (which I inherited, my daughter however has her daddy's pretty pout) It's a clothespin. On your lower lip, while you sleep. I'm assuming that it would give you an almighty bruise, thus the damaged tissue would make it look as though you had a naturally bee-stung mouth. That or it did absolutely nothing, but the placebo effect made girls continue to do it in hopes that their lips would look lovelier.
