How many of us are looking for a bowler and when finally found it, it is in almost perfect condition, except by the crown and brim ribbon that are ripped and deteriorated, and the sweatband separated from the hat?
Frustrating don't you think?
Well, I was looking for a bowler of a very large size, as a present for a good friend who wear 7 1/2, a really hard to find, I don't like the modern Bowlers that you can find in the web hatstores so I decide to look for a vintage one.
and found it, but in the same conditions I mentioned before, the brim ribbon was demaged all the way arround.
I usually made some restoration in my fedoras, like sweatband, lining or ribbon replacement, but never before in a Bowler, and let me tell you, it was a real challenge.
First have to go to a local Millinery store and buy 6 ft of black ribbon of the same width as the original.
Second, had to unsew the brim ribbon to see how was attached.
After that was impossible to stop.
I decide to take some photos of the process as a testimony of my first bowler renovation.
This is the sweatband before the work, only the thread was missing and the holes intact.
This is the condition of the crown and brim ribbon.
This is the new ribbon being sewed to the brim, I used the same holes on the brim of the previous stitching.
The old bow(top) and the new one (had to use this effect to show the details)
The Sweatband already attached.
The final result
Other view
A closer view of the back where the both ends of the brim ribbon joints
All process made by hand, and took me 2 days to complete.
I feel really satisfied.
Anny comment?
