Correct A2 Name Tag Placement

I've got a very nice leather name tag in hand from a great supplier in Italy. There's a local firm that has gobs of experience in stitching leather and they have agreed to attach it for me.

Before I go off to have this done, I want to make sure I don't get the placement just wrong. It is my understanding that such things were field-sewn during the war. Whatever base you were on, you went to "the guy" who sewed on tags, patches and the like, right? So as long as it's straight and logically positioned on the upper left breast (MY left), it's ok. Or is that wrong?
Or is there a regulation for it? i.e. X inches from zip, X inches above pocket?

I was always under the impression that it was done haphazardly as you say, Scot. Not too sure, though. It's been a while since I did the research to have mine sewn on.

The name tape usually on upper left breast.
Exact placement varies some, as does exact unit patch locus;
variety being the stuff of legend.

Scot, you can pretty much put it anywhere you want! There was an even greater degree of variety before the war, and nothing I've seen formalized that during the war, either. This pic of the GHQ AF staff around 1933-1935 illustates that pretty well. Tinker has no nametag on his A-1, though he does have a distinctive insignia, and Randolph doesn't have a nametag on his A-2, either. Royce may have a nametag sitting on top of the left pocket of his A-1, but if it is a nametag, the leather matches the jacket. Westover, Arnold, and Krogstad all have theirs sitting right on the left pocket flap (Krogstad's is an A-1), in the commonly seen lighter colored, embossed leather. Westover even has his wings on the left breast.

From what I can tell, the nametag migrated up to the left breast just becasue it looked better there!

For those interested, this photo came from Mauer Mauer's (a man so great they named him twice!) Aviation in the U.S. Army, 1919-1939. A great reference, if you don't have it.

Thanks Jack - exactly the reference photo I was looking for!
I think it'll go on the left breast, and be sticthed on straight and evenly. Otherwise, we'll eyeball what looks good.

Thanks Pal.
