Alex Steinweiss, one of the great graphic designers of the mid-twentieth century has died at 94. Headline nonwithstanding, he did *not* originate the "artistic album cover" -- there are any number of examples from the mid-1930s preceding his work -- but he did raise it to a very high form of art.

This is the first I've heard, Lizzie. That's horribly sad. He did wonderful work over a long period of time. Rarely are graphic designers considered to be real artists unfortunately, but he certainly should be.

  4. In case any Loungers weren't able to go, a requiem mass for Archduke Otto was held on July 17 in Budapest; it included the burial of the urn containing his heart in the Benedictine Pannonhalma Arch abbey. You read that right.

Sad, isn't it, that when one of the last great gentlemen of Europe passes, it passes virtually un-noticed in the United States.

  6. Yes, it's sad...and yes, he was a gentleman in the truest sense. THE ECONOMIST published a glowing obituary, two weeks too late.

  7. Amazing man....

The people in his family certainly live long lives. His brother is only four years younger and is still alive and his wife died last year.

Oh is that what that was about? I did see something in passing on the news but didn't really take it in.

I know this shouldn't be surprising considering the road she was on but I'm totally devastated by this news. I was always rooting for her....

Agreed. "Back to Black" was one of the few pop albums in recent years that I felt was good enough to buy, and a sound well worth supporting. Watching her old live performances on Jools Holland, you couldn't help but say to yourself, "c'mon Amy, please clean up. Music needs people like you."

Lucian Freud, the last Habsburg, and Amy Winehouse. I just finished listening to "Back to Black" in honor of the last; I may reread "The Fall of the Dynasties" in honor of the second, and look at the colossal ugly (but amazing) nudes of Freud in honor of him.
