I’ve had a few hats with that checkerboard liner and they were, I believe, 1970s or newer. Dating hats is still a mystery to me most of the time.

Check out the dating Stetsons by liner thread:

Normally I'd agree about the sweat, but that design looks just a bit different. That, the brown sweatband, and the sweat markings are what has me leaning Canadian. Wish it had a size tag, that would help immensely.

All I know is, if I wear my ostrich boots on a cold day my toes FREEZE! Much more than bullhide boots anyway.
That probably says more about the quality of the boot than it does the ostrich leather. Most temperature variance is going to come from the ground thru contact with the sole, hot or cold. Not thru the vamp.

You are right on the money. Another clue is the use of the silver rather than gold in the tip logo. Canadan Stetsons did that...they used silver on the sweat generally too rather than gold foil.

Well, they are Lucchese ropers... the "leather" is very thin, and soft. A real comfortable boot. I just don't wear them in cool or cold weather anymore. I think canvas tennis shoes are warmer.

Makes sense to me. If it durable, doesn’t shrink much, and is cool wearing than I’m all for it. I wonder why we don’t see more sweats from ostrich?

Cost and availability. Not a lot of ostrich production here and the best comes from South African farmers. Full quill ostrich is very expensive and can easily raise the cost of a custom pair of cowboy boots several hundred dollars over calf. Only about 30% of an ostrich hide is full quill, the remainder of the hide is comprised of partial, smooth and leg skin.

Disturbing side note: Farmed ostrich are plucked about 30 days prior to harvest so the quill holes will close up.

Vintage 7-1/4 1950s Royal Stetson Bantam Fedora

Just bought this one on eBay. This was my first time watching the last seconds of an auction. How exciting! It starts vibrating every few seconds... And you wish all the other bidders' fingers have gone numb.
