Society's arms of control
Think they're smart, can't think for themselves
Laugh at us behind our backs
I find satisfaction in what they lack

We are tired of your abuse
Try to stop us, it's no use
We are born with a chance
And I am gonna have my chance

Rise Above - Black Flag

Oh my name it is nothin'
My age it means less
The country I come from
Is called the Midwest
I was taught and brought up there
The laws to abide
And the land that I live in
Has God on its side.

Oh the history books tell it
They tell it so well
The cavalries charged
The Indians fell
The cavalries charged
The Indians died
Oh the country was young
With God on its side.

The Spanish-American
War had its day
And the Civil War too
Was soon laid away
And the names of the heroes
I was made to memorize
With guns on their hands
And God on their side.

The First World War, boys
It came and it went
The reason for fighting
I never did get
But I learned to accept it
Accept it with pride
For you don't count the dead
When God's on your side.

When the Second World War
Came to an end
We forgave the Germans
And then we were friends
Though they murdered six million
In the ovens they fried
The Germans now too
Have God on their side.

I've learned to hate Russians
All through my whole life
If another war comes
It's them we must fight
To hate them and fear them
To run and to hide
And accept it all bravely
With God on my side.

But now we got weapons
Of the chemical dust
If fire them we're forced to
Then fire them we must
One push of the button
And a shot the world wide
And you never ask questions
When God's on your side.

In a many dark hour
I've been thinkin' about this
That Jesus Christ
Was betrayed by a kiss
But I can't think for you
You'll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot
Had God on his side.

So now as I'm leavin'
I'm weary as Hell
The confusion I'm feelin'
Ain't no tongue can tell
The words fill my head
And fall to the floor
If God's on our side
He'll stop the next war.

With God On Our Side - Bob Dylan

As I walked down by the riverside
One evening in the spring
Heard a long gone song
From days gone by
Blown in on the great north wind
Though there is no lonesome corncrakes cry
Of sorrow and delight
You can hear the cars
And the shouts from bars
And the laughter and the fights

May the ghosts that howled
Round the house at night
Never keep you from your sleep
May they all sleep tight
Down in hell tonight
Or wherever they may be

As I walked on with a heavy heart
Then a stone danced on the tide
And the song went on
Though the lights were gone
And the north wind gently sighed
And an evening breeze coming from the east
That kissed the riverside
So I pray now child that you sleep tonight
When you hear this lullaby
May the wind that blows from haunted graves
Never bring you misery
May the angels bright
Watch you tonight
And keep you while you sleep

"Take a sentiment that's real
Take the way you really feel
Find a safe place to hide it.
You've ironed out the irony
And didn't find it
On the clock from 9 to 5
You're at the bar from 5 til 9
Home, watch TV til you're blinded
Three great ways to wast your mind,
and you don't mind it!
Just raise a glass of booze,
Your only substance is the one that you abuse!"

Iron out the irony

Everytime I get a new superior at work I hear the last line of "Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who..."Meet the new boss, he's the same as the old boss.....".

Are There Anymore Like You?

You've got those eyes
That hypnotize
Bright as the deep blue sea
And you got those lips
That wish to be kissed
I wish they were kissing me
Thanks for dance,
Thanks for the drink.
But I see on your finger
A gold wedding ring
So I better go
Before I lose control
But there's one thing
That I'd like to know

Are there anymore like you
Where you came from?
If there is I want to get me one
My heart is breakin'
Cause your heart is taken
Are there anymore like you
Where you came from?

I must confess I'd be a mess
If I stayed for one more song
Cause the way you look at me
It's easy to see
I ain't going to last that long
Still I wish I could stay
And I wish you were free
But I'd better get away
Before you get to me
Well there ain't no one to blame
But ain't it a shame
Somebody else has got your name

Are there anymore like you
Where you came from?
If there is I want to get me one
My heart is breakin'
Cause your heart is taken
Are there anymore like you
Where you came from?

Some other place,
Some other time
I'll find somebody just like you
And make him mine
But till I do I'll be lonesome and blue
And I'll keep on dreaming of you

Are there anymore like you
Where you came from?
If there is I want to get me one
My heart is breakin'
Cause your heart is taken
Are there anymore like you
Just one will do
Are there anymore like you
Where you came from?

"If Today Was Your Last Day"

My best friend gave me the best advice
He said each day's a gift and not a given right
Leave no stone unturned, leave your fears behind
And try to take the path less traveled by
That first step you take is the longest stride

If today was your last day
And tomorrow was too late
Could you say goodbye to yesterday?
Would you live each moment like your last?
Leave old pictures in the past
Donate every dime you have?
If today was your last day

Against the grain should be a way of life
What's worth the prize is always worth the fight
Every second counts 'cause there's no second try
So live like you'll never live it twice
Don't take the free ride in your own life

If today was your last day
And tomorrow was too late
Could you say goodbye to yesterday?
Would you live each moment like your last?
Leave old pictures in the past
Donate every dime you have?
Would you call old friends you never see?
Reminisce old memories
Would you forgive your enemies?
Would you find that one you're dreamin' of?
Swear up and down to God above
That you finally fall in love
If today was your last day

If today was your last day
Would you make your mark by mending a broken heart?
You know it's never too late to shoot for the stars
Regardless of who you are
So do whatever it takes
'Cause you can't rewind a moment in this life
Let nothin' stand in your way
Cause the hands of time are never on your side

Stardust, as sung by Nat King Cole(proving the original is NOT always the best)

And now the purple dusk of twilight time
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky the little stars climb
Always reminding me that we're apart

You wander down the lane and far away
Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now the stardust of yesterday
The music of the years gone by

Sometimes I wonder why I spend
The lonely night dreaming of a song
The melody haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
When our love was new
And each kiss an inspiration
But that was long ago
Now my consolation
Is in the stardust of a song

Beside a garden wall
When stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale tells his fairy tale
A paradise where roses bloom
Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain
My stardust melody
The memory of love's refrain

Or if I am really feeling Patriotic. Though it can be a poem as well.

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountain green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among those dark satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.

Hares On The Mountain

Chris Wood's lovely rewrite of a traditional English song, recorded by Chris & Andy Cutting on their Lusignac album from 1995.
Carried me through a particularly dark time quite a few years ago.

Hares On The Mountain

If all you young girls were like hares on the mountain
We'd soon get our boots on and go out a-walking.
But if all you young girls were like swans in the water
We'd soon take those boots off and dive in there after.

And if all you young girls were like stars in the dark
We'd chase round the world to avoid the dawn's spark.
And if all you young girls were like the sun in the morning
We'd sit bleary-eyed just to see the day dawning.

And if all you young girls were like rain from the sky
We'd stand out in T-shirts and shun all things dry.
And if all you young girls were like the hot August sun
Then we'd sit out with ice-cream and get nothing done.

And if all you young girls flew south like the swallow
There's be nothing for it but to up sticks and follow.
But if all you young girls were like my own true lover
Then all you young men would love them as I love her.
