Hats taking a sunbath...

I took out some of my vintage hats that smell too "vintagie", you know what I mean, for a sunbath by my window. Thought I'd share an image. (the names in quotations refer to their color as it is written on the inside tag)

From left to right:

Borsalino "Argento", Borsalino Colombo, Borsalino "Quarzo", Stetson Whippet and my precious Knox Vagabond.

Why do you ask?
What IS that smell?

I know exactly what you mean about hats smelling too vintagey. You have a nice collection there, they're all really nice. That Knox is fantastic looking, I am jealous of it!

Seriously! that smell is just persistent!
Thanks for your comment about the Knox: you should have seen it when I first got it! it took me many weeks and patience to restore it. Specially the sweatband and finding the ribbon, which is the original size and also vintage!

Take some crumpled up newspaper and put as much in the crown as you can [even put an open crown in it] then either put the hat back in its box or hang it up.
I have done this with the hat hanging on the hat rack and gotten rid of most if not all the scent.
But it works better in a hat box.

Wow! I'll have to try this method. Sure sounds easy. I've got a couple of nice Stetson stingies I bought at a local thrift which are permeated with the pungent smell of tobacco. Even a week in the sun was not enough to completely air them out.

I've never tried newspaper. I'd like to try it one day. I've had very good results with baking soda. Just put an open box of the stuff in the bottom of the hat box. After a week or so remove and air the hat in the fresh air. This has worked very well for me on more than one occasion.

You're quite welcome, and I must say, it's time well spent from where I sit.
