I know, sounds odd doesn't it, but this is England after all and we are talking about an RAF jumper/jersey (you know, the typical white high neck jumpers from the war). So the word FROCK is misleading, it's more like a jumper. (see photos below please).
Sadly, movies like the Battle of Britain portray the likes of Michael Caine in a navy high roll-neck jumper and so everyone thinks, that must be the typical white RAF jumper/frock. WRONG!!
The real deal isn't THAT sexy!! But it is functional. The loose single weave high neck was loose and floppy so that a silk/rayon scarf or cravat could go underneath to allow a friction free twist of the neck to check for huns on your tail (a matter of life or death for RAF fighter pilots).
The RN Submariner's roll-neck jumper would just chaff the skin!!!
Sooooooo....Anybody out there who might have an original/vintage pattern for one of these jumpers that I could have a copy of please and my Auntie Middleton can knit me one up???? Be very grateful
