My Dobbs Rainbow. I asked in tje Ask a Qustion thread, but I will ask here as well:
Are all Rainbows and Game Birds narrow-brimmed?

I’ve seen more of the Game Birds and I know not all of them are stingy. They seem to have come in several styles, including pork pies. I’m sure I’ve also seen the Rainbow with a more generous brim.

Any ideas on the age of this one?

Nice hat! If I’m reading it right, it looks like the Hatted Professor puts it as a 1960s hat. You apparently still got a LOT of hat for $16.50 in the ‘60s!

I looked at the Dobbs dating thread and I'm going to have to go with 1940s. I hadn't even noticed it, but it has the Guild Edge debossment on the sweat. So that puts it post 1944. And the paper label
DSCN5885 crop by Michael A2012, on Flickr
looks to pre-date 1950 as well. Where he shows the coach crest liner and dates it to the 60s, he mentions that it was that is had an oilskin protector and was a revival of the 1940s design. Though he never shows a 1940s example. Mine doesn't have an oilskin protector. So my feeling, at the moment, is somewhere in the second half of the 40s.

Thanks,
Michael

I was just going by the liner. Brad did mention the liner form the 60s as being recycled from an earlier time, but I didn’t see an example of that liner in his earlier Dobbs series. I don’t have any personal knowledge as to the dating. I happily acquiesce to my seniors.

It seems to me that the older ones had more generous brims. As they moved toward the 60s, they got stingier and somewhat porkier. My OPS Game Bird has, I think, a 2 3/4" brim.

Sent directly from my mind to yours.

I think that is one of the older liner logos as seen on the Hatted Professor website. It sure is purdy. Love that bow, I would say $16.50 might have been a higher end at this vintage.

My mystery Dobbs Game Bird Fifteen arrived. I knew it was going to be a stingy, but I had no idea it would have such a low crown. Additionally, despite the seller insisting there wasn’t a paper label hiding behind the sweat the label was there plain as day. :(

I don’t know when Dobbs stopped making the Game Bird but I have to believe this was close to then. If anyone is interested in the hat CHEAP send me a PM. The heather felt is nice, but there are a couple of bites. The underwelt brim is deeply flanged and I think it would make a good pork pie for someone.

Hey i was thinking...
Maybe Iggy can make it bigger on the inside then the outside??
Nice tribute to the CHP today by the way.
And an aside...maybe next time you’re there you can ask them to show you the black CHP crosszip section!! Ha ha
B

I’m guessing that is some sort of leather jacket? While reading it I felt nauseous and the room got darker.

The CHP did have a store/PX on site but it was already closed for the day when I got there. I just lucked into watching the cadets forming up and polishing the names.

I am trying to get into the shower but I can't from reading this and laughing so hard. Gonna be late for my first patient.
