This is an interesting little hat. “Hampton Hall” sold by Gimbels. 2-1/4” raw edge brim, 5” open crown, 1-3/8” ribbon. 21” circumference. Only 69 grams. It is very soft and malleable — almost too easily shaped (by wind, a careless look, etc.). The felt is more blue than the photos show. Not sure of the age, buts it’s been a long time since Gimbels sold a $2.00 hat.

Moth approved!

Nice find, Bob. Gimbels seems to have favored bright coloured liners. I have one also sporting a bright blue liner.

A new to me Penn Craft (Stetson) bowler. This is my third Penn Craft (not that I'm counting!) and has the same silky smooth finish, and same solid construction, as my other two. This one is a size up from my norm, but some hats are so good, it's worth a few felt shims to get a good fit! All the components are in excellent condition and it is, for all practical purposes, NOS. I'm glad Fall is not far away! This one has a date stamp on the sweatband, so that is something special about this one as well.

Sometimes you just have to, Randy. Like Jim is the Duke of Dalton, you're the Pope of Penn!

Nr. 5: last one, a Tesi Parabuntal straw hat in excellent condition. Very lightweight, perfect for summer. Seller did not know if it was size 58 or 59, 2 labels though.....
I prefer 59, but it is a 58, but i am okay with that ;-)

An excellent haul this week, Marcel. Lovely hats and these parabuntal hats are tough to find over here in Europe.

Lottery hats don't always work out. That's why they're lottery hats. Let's see what came in this week. The wins and losses. Let's start with the losses. Listed as measured size 55 I took a chance. Measurements are unreliable (as we'll see later). How hard can it be though to look at a label and staing the size?
Au Chapeau d'Or velours hat in a size 54. Raw edge brim at 5,5cm and the crown at 10,5 at the center dent. Au Chapeau d'Or was actually the retailer, but there's no label inside the hat. Very decent pre-war velour hat, but it took me a while to get it back to its original glory. Too bad about the size.

Another one from the same retailer. Same problem. This one has the size label actually on the sweatband!
Bruas velours hat for Au Chapeau d'Or. Size 55 with the raw edge brim at 5,4cm and the crown at 11cm at the center dent. Felt seems to have been made by Hukber (could also be Huleber) of Wien, Austria. It is the better felt of the the two. Really a quality velours. I could try and stretch it. but the leather has already shrunk somewhat and I have velour hats that fit me, so I don't need to.

On to the wins. First one wasn't really a gamble. Advertised as a size 55, but this time the size label was visible and the English 6 7/8 is a size 56. Yes, please.

Brummel's Nice fedora in grey. Size 56 with the overwelt brim at 6cm and the crown at 10,5 at the center dent. It was in a bit of a state when it arrived but it responded very well to brushing and steaming and it got got right back to where it belongs. Always very satisfying.

Final one and the best one. Also advertised as a size 54 to 55, but I had to try.
Barbisio Lontra in (wait for it...!) dark green! :). Whaaaat?!
Size 57 with the raw edge brim at 4,8 and the crown at 10,5cm at the center dent. Stingy as it is, it doesn't feel at all like a tiny hat, because of the nice full crown. The hat was in a dreadful state (as advertised) but it seems you can't keep an almost hundred year old lontra felt down. The liner wasn't original, so I replced it with something a bit more fitting (although not Barbisio). The pictures were taken halfway through (had to do some spot cleaning around the brim break with some naphtha.
