They were acquired by Battersby in the '30's. Likely safe to assume this is pre-WW2. Soft but dense with a frayed edge ribbon.

Neither location lasted much longer

Luck and Sons were bought by Battersby's well before 1900 because one of the travellers they took on from Luck's was a man called Tom Reed, father of Austin Reed, and Battersby's actually gave Austin Reed financial help to set up his business in 1900 (which went into receivership the other day sadly).
They paid £1000 for the order book and goodwill according to old papers I have.

Just to add - Battersbys kept the label and no doubt used it on hats from their own factory depending on customer demand. Their London warehouse was in Nicholl Square and as your pictures show it was destroyed in world war 2.

Finally took delivery of my third Longmire hat by H-Bar Hatworks, this one being the prototype that was made for the TV show but not used as the production preferred a darker hat for sheriff Walt Longmire. I can't blame them ;)

I haven't hunted for manufacturing labels yet (none easily visible) but I believe from the 1930s. The customs stamps affixed to the Knox hat box were in use from 1930-39. No store imprint, likely purchased from the Knox Hat Store at 40th and Fifth Ave., seen in the postcard just to the south of the NYPL lion. The hat is in remarkable condition, perhaps never worn. The box is quite heavy and also in good condition, with both leather straps and snaps functioning. Will post some better daylight photos in a few days.
