So my wife doesn’t love this hat—“it’s eye-catching” she said while rolling her eyes. And it is a pretty bold statement of a hat, with a 5/8” copper binding that really catches the light and a dramatic 2 3/4” brim.

Apart from some anxiety about pulling off the wearing of such a hat, it is one of the nicest fedoras I’ve ever held. A Dobb’s Fifteen originally purchased in Philadelphia. The felt is unbelievably soft and malleable. It feels like velvet—such a difference from my other hats. I get why you would’ve paid the extra $5 back in the day.

Keeping it for now—will see how brave I’m feeling in the fall.

Fabulous hat David. Quite striking with the contrasting brim binding. I suspect I might have gotten a similar reaction from my wife.

Lock&Co fedora in a brown colour called chestnut. Size 62, or 7 5/8 UK, with a brim of 5,5cm and the crown at 11,5cm at the center dent. Unlined but likely did have a liner at one point. Doesn't come across as a stingy brim though due to its shape, which is more straight and full, and proportions. The brim has a very nice cuppy shape at the back. Dang; forgot to straighten the ribbon.

Barbisio fedora in grey. Size 62 with a brim width of 6,5cm and a crown of 11,5cm at the front. A narrow and nicely done overwelt brim edge. No label other than its size label. Colour could be any number of Barbisio greys: Tanaro, Sesia, Ticino, Ginevra? All of these are pretty close in tone. Some taper to the crown. It has already been spoken for.

This spin of the wheel turned out OK.

Nice Adam (Miller) Panama.

And a Borsalino lightweight that appears to have been refurbed at some point (the liner is taped and the original factory sticker replaced -- the brim almost looks like it had stitching at some point too). An unfortunate moth nip here and there as well a an odd "line" in the felt.

"Dogma" "Striegau", Wool, 57 cm, possibly 1930s maybe later 1920s and most likely made by Berlin - Gubener Hutfabrik. This is based on the Paper Label type and that "Striegau" was located in Germany but after WWII Strzegom, Poland. The Hat was sold by Hut Köhl Kehl am Rhein** which is directly across the Rhein from Stroudsburg. The Wool felt is very pliable with high gloss. The overall condition is very good and the Crown Tip Patch is still in place. The "Dogma" brand / mark is very unique. I enjoy finding these old German Wool Soft Felt Hats and this one is a great example.

I don’t know that you could exactly say why but this hat is fantastic! The shape is really something special. Thanks for sharing this, Steve.

I just picked up this new modern straw Stratoliner, it was missing it's pin and the vendor was not helpful, an exchange would have cost half the sale price. Yesterday I found a suitable substitute...

My father's brother-in-law Ray Cappelli passed away last year far too young. He was a police Captain, my next door neighbor and friend, and he collected pre-WWII hat pins that commemorated States, Towns and local attractions. His widow didn't want any of the pins, so they ended up at my father's house
I was given the opportunity to go through 6 trays of NOS salesman samples and found this very cool Gloucester Massachusetts boat pin that now lives on my straw Stratoliner.
