Stetson Twenty "The Sovereign" - Mode Edge. I think this is the only hat I have that has the Mode Edge. It is also the first hat I have that uses the word "Twenty" anywhere in the marketing language. I'm not sure of the significance of having it printed on the liner; perhaps someone more knowledgeable than me can enlighten me.

Let me know what you think. :)

It's a late 50s early 60s Stetson. Felt is still probably decent quality but I'm guessing the brim is close to 2" and the blocking profile probably has more taper and is shorter than earlier models.

The Sovereign level was sold at Twenty dollars, hence the Twenty. Pretty sure Stetson quality levels from that era went Royal, Royal DeLuxe, 3X, Sovereign/Twenty, Twenty-five, One Hundred. There may also have been an Imperial and 7x clear beaver in there as well in that time frame. Can't speak to the difference in felt quality at various levels but I think the trimmings and attention to detail improved as you paid more money. That said I have an royal stetson open road that has the 7 1/4 tag dating it to that era (although oddly enough the liner isn't plastic tipped and looks like on from the early 50s so maybe its older than I think) that has pretty nice thin and dense felt, similar to a 3x I have from the early 50s. My experience is that you can't always tell exactly what the hat is going to be like until you have it in hand.

I believe mode edge is one of Stetson's names for a cavanagh edge.

The vintage hats I first bought that started me down the road towards my hat obsession came from this era but weren't quite what I was looking for. For me, I've found better luck finding what I'm personally looking for with hats from the early 50s and earlier, and am trying to stop buying anything that's not 40s or earlier (but those are harder to come by). But I also recently bought and kept a late 50s hat with a couple holes in the crown cuz the color was so great (my first green), even though the crown is lower than I usually like.

What do you think about the hat?

Thank you. I appreciate the detailed input.

50's-60's was what I was thinking. Specifically, I was assuming that by the time the "Twenty" designation makes it to the liner, it is more of a marketing thing than it was when it was a price tag, but it still has quality implications and I'll take it. :) Yes, the mode edge is Stetson's name for the Cav Edge; I don't know if there are others. I wanted this hat for that detail also.

I am also trying to move into buying hats from the 30's and 40's but it is damn difficult in my size, and the fact that I usually need at least a half size bigger in real vintage hats doesn't help. I have been very tempted to buy hats that don't fit me just because they are from the era that I want, or have other details I want, but so far I have (mostly) successfully resisted.

As far as the hat itself, I like the crown shape, I like the color, I like the wide ribbon, I like the keyhole tag and the looped bow. The brim is a bit shorter than I would prefer, but still wearable. I don't have many Stetsons. I have an RD Homburg that needs some refurb work, a more modern Stratoliner that I posted in the "wearing" thread this morning, two lesser quality 60s-era Sovereigns that I got relatively cheaply, and I think a cap or two.

Aside from this one, because of the "Twenty" and the mode edge detail, I haven't been buying them until I find one that fits me from earlier in the peak hat era.

Oh, and I don't know how I feel about the little doo-dad on the bow - I'm gonna sit with it for a minute, and I'll probably leave it alone since it is period-correct, but I'm not particularly drawn to jewelry on my hats.

I think its a great looking hat. I agree with you that the brim could be a little wider but overall a great looking hat.
