I agree. Although the Brakeman almost has my attention.
I'm with BigJ on this. To generalize, Japanese repros of whatever cannot be touched, always made with so much care, attention to detail and love, but the moment they begin to reinvent...
I think it's a little unfair to group every Japanese repro brand together.
Freewheelers is one of the most out there that I can think of...
I agree the design of Freewheelers jacket are out there but as said some if not all of their jackets were accurate repros of vintage jackets like Leathertogs, Peter's etc including the Rocketeer style jacket. I doubt they did much reinventing because that's not what their customers want from them. So credits should go to the those who were light years ahead in leather jacket design that even 70 years later, people still think those design are "out there" and to the Japanese who appreciates such "out there" design. LOL
Freewheeler's product background
and taken photos of real vintage jackets from the book Superfluous mentioned.
I stand corrected. Guess the A-1 did have a pen pocket. Can't believe that I never noticed that before...perhaps because original pockets usually were so tiny compared to the A2 & G1 style.
Learn something surprisingly new all the time....
These obsessed Japanese do tweak the jackets measurements and proportionality to fit their physique. But design? Unlikely.
BTW just came across this Ralph Lauren repro of the Leathertog while browsing the Yahoo auction Japan trying to make good use of the Buyee free coupons. May say something about the styling in our modern eyes when Mr Lauren probably only made a Ladies version.
Well..the first link works...
Sorry to hijack this thread...but has anyone else noticed that the 'Observation Bar' isn't available anymore on the FL list of forum sections..??
Observation Bar is visible and accessible on the mobile version of TFL.
but they (japanese) do invent original stuff sometime...
Ah, yes, the perfect 'beater' jacket!
This could be the start of something big. I wonder how Ken Calder would feel about a "Knights of Malta" design.
that one is actually kind of cool... if you can pull it off, that is.
Thanks...it seems to be for others as well...just not for me. I've contacted management about my dilemma (Ha... )
I am sorry if my comment was unclear but I was talking about RM and Freewheelers etc. Evidently Evisu, WTAPS and Neighborhood etc do tweak the design in major ways. That's their market and a blasphemy if mentioned here. Oops. LOL.
Can't resist throwing in that the original French novel of Planet of the Apes was an analogy of one man's experience as a POW of the Japanese.
