Reblock a western

I am thinking about either reblocking this hat or selling it.

Don't want to sell it because the then Pres of Stetson Pierre Bessez arranged for me to get this. It has sentimental value. Besides it is a great hat.

I am thinking country rather than western. Or any creative style.

Rebashing a western can be done...I converted an old western last year. As long as you measure correctly, trimming the brim is easy.

It depends...

Some years ago, I received a 4x Resistol western hat as a gift. It had a cattleman's crease, and I wanted a Denton Pinch. I took it to a custom hatter who had made a hat for me. It took him about 6 weeks and multiple attempts to get the new crease to "take." He said, "They must have creased that hat with a 50-ton press!" I have seen other cases were the ghost of past creases could be seen in a re-bashed hat. From what I've learned in this Forum and from some personal experience, modern western hats tend to be much stiffer and more difficult to work with than vintage lids. If you have access to a professional hat shop, it would be worth checking with a professional to see what they think is possible.

The hat was too expensive, too beautiful and fits perfectly for me to play nonsensical games with it.

An "El Presidente" 100x Stetson is a rare treasure indeed. A beautiful, luxurious hat. I have a 20x Resistol "Black Gold" that I like very much, and although it is no El Presidente, I feel the pre-blocked crown should not be messed with. It is just too stiff. The brim, however, can be re-shaped at will with a little steam. I keep this hat in a "Hat Latch" which is a press that holds the brim in a specific shape until you use it. I acquired this in Tucumcari, New Mexico, where they are made.

The other option is to leave the crown as is, and have the brim trimmed to "Open Road " size which gives you a dress or city size hat, a la Lyndon Johnson style. That, I think, is what I would do with it. It would look great with a suit or fine overcoat.

I agree with Hatsquad. Im lucky enough to have a beautiful clear beaver 7x and it is shaped like Hatsquad suggested. At first I thought the brim was too short for a western, 2 1/2, but now find it goes with everything. It has the shape as suggested and the curled brim. Your hat in MHO would be awesome like that.

I also agree with Optimo. I just sent a 25 in for restitching of the band, although the hat is nowhere near as expensive as yours I was impressed by the initial customer service and the " I would not think of gluing it back" anwser

I did do it myself

I couldn't resist the temptation for my hands to knead the felt and shape things the way I envisioned.

I started with a cattleman's crown then a telescope now it is a a crossover. Crown is 4" Brim 4" I do not think I will trim the brim I like this for shade

Not bad. Look for Conversion Corral & see those westerns recreased. I trimmed down my brim as well. If I had that nice of a Stetson, I would send it to a hatter to have them block to an open crown. They have the tools to get it there better than I can. I have taken cattleman creases out of a few Open Roads & the western I posted in the Conv Corral & can still see hints of the former crease like yours is showing. JMHO
