My price point is around $250 to $350 (used). Grade 13-14, 15-16. I’m well aware of what I’m looking for. I also know, like the coat you were about to drop big $$$ for, they can run into the thousands.

The “grade” system of valuing or defining Panama hats is plagued with problems. There isn’t a governing body setting standards. One company’s grade 16 is another company’s grade 4. The weaves per square inch system is, I believe, a much fairer and more accurate system. Of course, there are other attributes beside weave count that go into a fine hat.

I think it’s going to be tough for you as used high end Panama hats in great condition are rare. I’m your size and I keep a close eye on the vintage hat market. What you are looking for is very rare. Are you set on a used hat?

I have three Panama hats all montecristi. Two higher WPI around the 300-600 mark. One lower around the 150 WPI. Honestly it’s the cheaper and lower WPI I wear the most. The higher the WPI the softer and more fine it is. It’s almost like linen the higher you go but also the floppier. Your head shape can distort the brim more as well. The 150 is a little sturdier and stiffer so doesn’t flop as bad in a wind either. My experience in the Alberta wind.
The only company I had experience with is PanamaHatsDirect. It was a positive experience so I would recommend them.
Hope that helps

Just when I thought I had found all the hats we had stowed away I came across this and another Panama. I did some investigation and found some history of Lee of Danbury CT. I searched the net for S Diamandis thinking it would help dating but found no references. This is a 7 1/8 with a 2 7/8 brim and 5 1/2 Crown. Enjoy

I concur. I sprung for an expensive high WPI optimo style which I love but it is floppy. I find myself wearing my lower WPI most often.
