Is that the original finish on it? (It would be the Colt "Government Black.") I've never seen an original from that era in such good condition.

I don't know Inkstained. I bought it from an old guy that had retired from the DNR about 10 years ago.

This is one of the most accurate handguns I've ever shot but finding ammo for it is a real challenge. It's my Dan Wesson SuperMag in 357 maximum caliber. I placed a 357 magnum cartridge beside the 357 maximum cartridge to show the differences.

I bet finding ammo is hard. Can you shoot standard 357 magnum or 38 special in that hog leg?

All that can be shot in it is the 357 maximum ammo. The gun store where I bought it said another customer tried shooting 357 magnum in one and it caused the cylinder to explode.
Did that gun store want to sell you the more expensive .357 Maximum? I can see a small falloff in accuracy using .357 mag, but causing the cylinder to explode?? Why??

I just took his word for it. They didn't have any 357 maximum ammo in stock when I bought the gun. I couldn't find it in any of the gun stores locally. I found a guy that sold reloads and he had a stash of the 357 maximums and I bought 200 rds. from him.

55merc, I would contact Dan Wesson and ask them about shooting Magnums or 38s in that.

Will do! Doing some research now, probably going to focus on a target shooting rifle to start with, and trying to get my girls used to the idea that sometimes food is taken from the wild, rather than bought at the store!

About 8 years ago a friend of mine asked me if I wanted these 2 boxes of 41 magnum cartridges because he said he didn't have anything to shoot them in.
Since I didn't have anything to shoot them in either I said, "Heck Yeah!". Seemed to me that if I had the ammo it would be imperative to buy something to use it in. At the time I was not aware how obscure 41 magnum handguns were. Took me 6 months of searching the local gun shops and then one day this showed up in the used counter at one.
And that's how I became the owner of this S&W model 57-1.
Since I didn't have anything to shoot them in either I said, "Heck Yeah!". Seemed to me that if I had the ammo it would be imperative to buy something to use it in.
