DAN DARK (Robert Downey Jr) is an unsuccessful crime novelist lying in hospital with a horrific case of psoriasis.
The state of his skin, it turns out, mirrors the state of his soul in this confusing drama.
A childhood where he had to endure his mum bringing home a succession of men, a failing career and a wife Nicola (Robin Wright Penn) who is cheating on him and trying to rip him off, all combine to induce a terrible anger and bitterness which is at the root of his affliction.
Dark himself is happy to stew in his condition, his only release being a fantasy world where he is Dan Dark, a cool, clear-skinned 1930s private eye (rather in the Bogart mould).
In this world he calls the shots and everyone who has wronged him is made to suffer.
