I am highly considering doing a retro-vation of of a bedroom. The time frame I am looking to recreate is the late 30's-WWII era. The one point I am uncertain about is flooring.

The problem: I rent, and as the land-lord recently recarpeted the room (high quality job), it is not likely I'll be given permission to remove the carpet and replace with wood flooring over the plywood.

From what I gather wall to wall carpet was not common until after the war. Perhaps I am wrong on this, and if so actually would be interested in knowing.

The carpet is a dark (chocolatish) brown, and nothing says post war really quick like this carpet.

Anyway, my question is: I am looking for ideas on how to deal with this carpet while retro-vating. Any ideas on how to "downplay" or reduce the visibility of the carpet, and draw the focus to the vinatge theme.

Any help will be most appreciated!
