Old-fashioned ketchup is the way to go. Modern sweet ketchup would be counterproductive.

We have a similar thing to Cannoli, in old Germany.

(Friedrich) "Schiller-Locke". It's puff pastry filled with cream or pudding-cream, sprinkled with coarse sugar.

Looks closer to a cream horn than a cannoli - I am a big cream horn fan.

Super girlfriend was up early this morning using farmer market apricots as inspiration for these two cakes (recipe out of “Classic German Baking” by Luisa Weiss). Calling @Trenchfriend :)

Fresh apricot torte ( the sugared one) with lemon and cardamom
Aprikosenkuchen (German fresh apricot cake) (the glazed one)

Cross post from the Autumn thread.

Fall has arrived at the Fading Fasts as our order just arrived from Russell Stover.

Most importantly, I can report that this year's crop of orange marshmallow pumpkins turned out well - it was a good harvest.

  12. Bob, can you slice & fry Paw-Paw's like potatoes? How about using a dehydrator to make chips? I've picked them up before but never did anything with them foodwise.

  13. @Hurricane Jack -- You can make batter dipped fritters, but the consistency is like a banana (with a few large seeds) and can be pretty soft. You can dehydrate them, but I've not done it.

  14. We used to eat jicama potatoes when I was a kid but as far as I know I've never eaten a Paw Paw. They're plentiful around here & I see a lot of them growing along riverbanks when I canoe.

And another one from SGF: Dark chocolate cake with bittersweet chocolate ganache and coconut-toasted almond filling covered in coconut buttercream.

FYI, the last two cakes have been made for friends' birthday parties. This is why we don't have any pics of the inside. Also, thought you guys would like to know that the two of us weren't just consuming layer cake after layer cake by ourselves :).
