I would say, direct. These are a great group of guys here, and their experience and knowledge are considerable. It's easy to misinterpret things in writing on an internet board. I'd say just take their suggestions to heart and learn, learn, learn.... except for @Bob Roberts , just block him now and save yourself a world of heartache. ;)

I can go with "direct." Even the most direct of them have taken their time to assist me. A great group of guys indeed. The only problem is that the more I learn the more I want.

I would think we each have our individually defined limits. Sadly, I have arrived at mine. About 35 hats in the collection, I now have exhausted the list of desired colours/styles and beginning to duplicate. I can actually admit to having too many as deciding which one to wear can some days be daunting (I realize this is a first world level of "problem"). My conclusion is that having filled not just my wish list but available storage space it is time to put a halt to acquisitions and time to just enjoy/wear what I have. Damn, now what shall I do with my time, nothing more to hunt and gather. Quite sad actually.

What??? I haven't even shown you the ideas I have for more Panama hats....

I keep setting limits and then breaking them. My hat stand holds 35 hats, but there are some holders on it that have 2 or 3 hats stacked now.... I do need to thin a few, but not many!

I keep looking at my hats trying to discern which to sell but at this point cannot bring myself to part with any. They all have a story that makes them more than just hats but part of my history. Possibly weird but I do get attached to my things.....my wife just shakes her head.....I guess one either has a collectors mindset or they don't. I collected vintage mountain bikes and topped out at 26. Offering to build another up for my wife and she would answer, "Why? I already have one." She also owns just one hat. But it is probably a very good thing to have just one collector per family.

I purchased the Adam hat. My only hat right now is my Goorin Gonzalez Panama and it has a ribbon of 1 1/2". I do prefer the thinner ribbons. Which means I'll be steering clear of some of the newer fedoras especially in the 60s when they started to get wider, at least so I've observed so far. Thank y'all so much. I'll be receiving it on the 21st and will be sure to post about it here.

If you ever have a hankering for homburgs, I've got a 6 3/4 Churchill in gray you can have for twenty bucks plus shipping
Fair enough. As stated it’s simply what I’ve observed some but nice to know that I’ve got plenty of learning to do. One can never learn too much on a subject or ever truly stop learning.

I think ribbon width has more to do with the crown style of the hat than the decade. I've seen pork pies from the 40's and 50's with ribbon widths greater than 2". Overall, though, it's a bit of a mixed bag. I'm sure haberdashers back in the day did lots of ribbon customizing for their customers. I'm a thick-ribbon guy, myself =) to. a. fault.

Stay here and screw around like me...
I've abt reached my (30+/-) limit as well. Nothing I'm actively seeking out. Maybe a new straw next summer or an ebay steal if I walk into it or possibly something I really love (if it's a no brainer) from the Hatco Outlet.

Yes, I have no plans to leave this wonderful forum. And I can live vicariously thru the other members acquisitions.

The only problem is that the more I learn the more I want.

the addiction in an absolute nutshell

that is exactly how it worked for me over the years ...

I'd learn about this style of hat ... I need one of those

I'd learn about this method of dating a hat ... I need a couple of those

I'd learn about this type of felt only made in this period ... I need a few of those

I'd find a few hat ads ... now I need that hat

I'd learn about the rarity of a certain piece and now the thrill of the chase juices are flowing and I need to search for one of those

it goes on and on and on ... then one day you wake up and there are 150+ vintage hat boxes in your office

I would convince myself to downsize ... sell about 10 ... then turn around and use that money to buy 3 or 4 real gems ... and it just continues

all of my life I have been a collector of something ... a picker even ... I am a thrill of the chase junkie ... there has always been this element to my addiction with collecting where I needed to complete the "set" ... or create some sort of group of similar pieces or groups made by the same manufacturer ... it's all very strange but I love it

and honestly there are a lot worse things I could be doing than hoarding beautiful fedoras from the 30s to mid 50s ...

been there done that ... and even though I spend about the same there is no threat of disappointing loved ones, losing friends or ending up in hand cuffs ;)

Thanks Moon.
A glimpse into my future. I just have to get my kids out of college before I get too crazy, two in college and one a junior in high school. My retirement house will need to be designed with hats in mind (and I've had enough of California).

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
thanks for clarifying Bob... I've suffered from it for my entire life and am well aware

it's also very annoying the way people throw around things like ... " oh my god I just have to have a strawberry smoothie every week I'm so OCD" ... uh ... no you're not ... you're just a moron who likes smoothies who knows nothing about OCD

those 3 letters have become like the go to claim for anyone who does anything they think is fkn quirky ... don't get me started

live with it and want to smash your head against the wall because you can't get out of the house due to rituals all the while knowing how absolutely ridiculous it is ... then see how much these idiots want to claim owning it

sorry ... sore subject for me :) .... carry on

I'll buy one, and tell myself that that's it no more. The next day I see one that I just have to have, and purchase that one. This is going on and on for a few years, now I have a decent amount, nothing like a good friend Anthony, but the collection just seems to keep growing larger and larger
