Alan Young, who gamely played straight man to a talking horse for five years in classic sitcom “Mr. Ed,” died Thursday at the Motion Picture and Television Home in Woodland Hills, Calif. He was 96.

Young had a very successful career in radio in the mid-1940s after coming to the US from Canada -- his "Alan Young Show" was one of the surprise hits of the 1944-45 season, and featured several supporting cast members who would later become better identified with the Fred Allen program. It was also on the Alan Young Show that Jim Backus introduced his "goofy millionaire" characterization that would become well-known in 1960s TV.

Young was a great enthusiast and booster for radio comedy, and made many appearances at "old time radio" conventions in the 1980s and 1990s.

On a related note, Mr. Ed, who's real name was Bamboo Harvester died in 1970. there are two versions of how and where he died. A second, Mr. Ed, who was used in the opening still shot used in the press kit, died in 1979 in Oklahoma.

I don't know if this fellow has been mentioned before or not but a search with his name didn't turn up anything.

A local radio personality, Mr. Ed Walker, passed away last October at the age of 83. He only retired when he was diagnosed with cancer but continued to record his program up until a week before he died. He originally partnered with Willard Scott to produced the Joyboys radio program decades ago. For all the time I've been listening to him, some 40 years, he played either old music or old radio shows. In fact, his Saturday night program on WAMU radio in Washington, DC, was entitled "The Big Broadcast." Mostly he played radio programs like Fibber Magee and Molly, Dragnet, Gunsmoke, and my favorite, Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar, "The man with the action-packed expense account." Mr. Walker was blind.

Another person I would mention, but probably no one here has probably ever heard of him, was Slavko Avsenik, who popularized Oberkrainer-style Slovenian folk music in Europe. He was 85. In the states, it's called Cleveland style.

I just read on the CBC website that Beth Howlands, best known as Vera from the tv show Alice, died on December 31, 2015, aged 74. She did not want any fuss hence the delay in notification.

Oh my goodness. This is sad. He was always a great character actor. I grew up seeing the PP films, and just saw the Bond fil You Only Live Twice just this weekend, in which he had a small role.

He was also on Last of the Summer Wine, one of the longest running English comedies.

Well, I thoroughly enjoyed the one several years ago about Bob Hope. In 1998, a prepared obituary by the Associated Press was inadvertently released, prompting Hope's death to be announced in the U.S. House of Representatives. When informed of this, Mr. Hope reportedly laughed his you-know-what off!

Yep he was a magnificent sportsman, both in & out of the ring...& what a boxer !!! he really did put nobility & art into his sport.
