    Your favorite hat marketing terms

I marvel at how some marketing terms get into a business and stay there. A good example is "genuine" shantung as though there were such a thing as "fake" shantung. Another favorite of mine is 100% wool. That might be good in the clothing business where a blend might include synthetics. But...

    Gray Homburg - 7 1/8

This Homburg was restored by Optimo in Chicago. It was cleaned, blocked and the binding and ribbon replaced. Looks like new. Probably 1940's. Manufacturer unknown. Sold by GM McKelvey & Co. You can have the hat for free. I only ask reimbursement for the $100 I spent on the restoration.

    Fine Hat Primer

I was in the mood to write this evening so I put up the beginning of a primer on fine hats on my blog. Check it out here if you have the time and let me know if you think it is worth finishing.

New Stetson 20X Bent Tree Straw Western Hat - 7 1/4

That's right, Podnuh! Brand new! Genu-wine Shantung paper straw body with ventilation woven right into the crown, 5" crown, 4" brim reducing to 3 3/4" at the sides, welted edge, mesh liner, leather sweat band. Marked size 7 1/4 and certainly way too big for my 7 1/8 thinking apparatus...

    Leather hats?

I never see mention of leather hats on FL. I don't own one either. I have some interest in the Barmah or BC hats. Any feedback from the group?

    Vintage hat cleaning

I just finished a thorough cleaning of my vintage homburg (the one in my avatar.) I started with an automotive product called Turtle Wax Upholstery Cleaner. It is a foam that is brushed into the fabric (or felt in this case.) After drying, you can brush off any residue. This handled the felt...

    Moth bites

Is there a fix for moth bites? Can they be sanded or filled with looosened fibers?

    The Ultimate Horror

I wish I had a picture. My wife and I had breakfast this morning in a typical family restaurant. At the counter was a man wearing a camo baseball cap. Bad enough, but this one had orange flames running along the sides. He was wearing it while eating to make things worse. Some people can't...

Apparently, straw hats don't have snap brims

.....or at least cheap ones don't. In my attempts to lure warmer weather to the Midwest by getting my hats ready, I worked on this cheapie today. The brim was turned up all the way around and there was no way to get the front of the brim down. So I applied some water, turned it down and dried...

    Akubra felt

Below is a closeup image of the felt on my vintage Akubra fedora and a shot of the entire hat is below that. My question is about the felt. It looks feels far coarser than the felts on my Stetsons or any of the other vintage hats I've had. In fact, it feels like wool felt but looks better...

    I recruited one.

I went yesterday to the Men's Wearhouse to pick up a suit that was ready from alterations. When I walked in the door wearing my new Stetson Whippet, one of the customers said to his wife "look, honey, a hat from the 40's. I wish I could buy a hat like that." I said "You can." He had and...

    Felt stiffness?

I'm curious about hat felt stiffness. I have three recent purchases. One was a new Stetson Open Road, then a "vintage" Borsalino Diamante and today I received my new Stetson Whippet. The felt on the Open Road is pretty stiff but the quality of the felt seems very good - as good as any of my...

    The wool felt hat thread.

Wool felt? A dirty word on the Fedora Lounge hat forum? Everybody wants fur felt. Wool felt hats are no good. I have some fur felt hats that I like a lot. They weren't expensive. They look great. They aren't as luxurious as fur felt hats but they can get the job done. So, if you have...

What makes a dress hat dressy?

I realize people can wear what they want but I'm curious about how we think of hats in terms of application. I would see a bowler, for instance, as something to be worn with a suit and a Kangol cap something to be worn with casual attire. I know these aren't rules. The image below is a...
