I just wanted to say hello to everyone. I joined a few days ago. I've been looking on here for a while now but I finally joined. Took me forever to get the correct email server. I've seen some you ladies on livejournal in the vintage hair community. Its great to be around so many other people who are obsessed with vintage culture just like me. I'm about to move to dallas.. I'm actually taking a break from packing right now but, i should probably get back to it. Thanks for the welcome!

Two or three months ago I was walking down Neal Street in Covent Garden in London. A popular place in London’s west end near Soho, quite often busy with tourists and trendy Londoners.

While waiting to cross the street I overheard a heated debate coming from behind me. Standing on the corner of Neal and Shelton Street, a couple were having an argument. I couldn't help but stop and stare.

In the middle of London, Britain’s most fast paced, cosmopolitan and cutting edge city stood two sweethearts. Him in a fedora, trench coat and brogues, her in seemed stockings, fur coat and cloche. They took my breath away. Surely this pair had been plucked from a teary scene on a train platform somewhere during the mid-forties?

Even through the cross words and raised voices, that is probably one of the most romantic scenes I've ever witnessed.

Ladies and Gents, my name is Jess, I’m 19 and I’m a fashion stylist/photographer studying in London.

I discovered the Fedora Lounge while looking for sayings and slang from the golden era on google. Can I just say what a great find it has been, I hope to stick around.

Ok, so I saw the 1st issue at a B&N in Dallas and the dame behind the counter sold it to me. Yesterday I'm in the joint again and find #2. Now I'm hooked. So I enlisted for 2 years.
Retired from the bar biz but like the classic recipes. Nice touch.
Never thought about armholes too much but now I do.
Can't find anyone who knows what an "algonquin-style" shoe is but I had a nice pair made in Italy. They had a "goat's-hoof pattern" on the sole. Don't know the mfr but I'm lookin' for help.
Pan Am Clipper must have been the classiest flight to Hawaii ever. Too bad they weren't around long.
Been buyin' vintage off and on for years. Relaxed shirts, no center box pleat, 2 pockets, no buttons on the collar. Inward-facing pleats and cuffs. Last new fedora was a Borsolino Antica Casa Fondata Nel 1857 in the early '90s. Since then, a Col. Littleton, an Orvis Wings of the West, and an Eucadorian Panama. There's a coupla' old Stetsons and one or two others somewhere around here as well. Currently bidding on a Stetson in black.
Driving a 2003 Thunderbird cause I like the weather. Yeah...any. Looking for a Morris Minor Tourer Convertible but no luck so far.
Fan of the 40's, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, film noir, and novels by Ed McBain, John Dunning, Peter Robinson, Craig Johnson, Julia Spencer-Fleming, and Daniel Silva to name a few. Collect some 1st editions (these and others). Oh yeah, I really like that Coltrane, Turrentine, you know sax stuff too. Divorced. Yeah, my kids live with me. It's just like I think it always shoulda' been. Especially when you're wide awake with a stogie and a cuppa at 3 AM.

That's simply amazing. Thanks so much for sharing - I wish I'd been a fly on the wall there.

bncarter, glad you found the door. Neighbors should get to know each other.

Welcome to the Lounge, both of you!

I believe an introduction is in order.

Hi there.
I do hope this would be the right room in this forum to make an introduction. I couldn't find any other section here where an introduction seemd appropriate, so I guess I'll go forward with that here.

Anyway, I just joined The Fedora Lounge, and I'm pretty excited about what I see here. The idea of talking to individuals who share some of the same passion for another era is just exciting.

So what is it about me that makes me fit in here? My name's Jonathan, I'm 21 years old, and a Criminology student in New Mexico. I am in training as a private investigator, and have had an interest in such a career since seeing many of the old Bogey Film Noirs years ago.

Aside from my career passions, I've always felt that I may have been born in the wrong decade. From an early age, I was always collecting various antiques. I started out with a passion and interest in old desk fans from the 30's with the wider grills and the metal blades; then moved onto zippo lighters and heavy, black rotary dial telephones. One day, I hope to furnish a home office with all my antiques; including a Zenith CobraMatic Phonograph I've managed to inherit.

I purchased my first fedora about five years ago. Since then, I've managed to bring that style back in before graduating high school. I now own several different fedoras from a classic fur felt Stetson to a lighter summer Bailey style. I've also picked up an interest in the "newscap" style hats.

Lastly, I have developed quite a collection of old time radio shows in mp3 format. I have developed a taste for anything from comedy to horror and crime. My favorites would definitely have to include Richard Diamond, The Shadow, Suspense, Orson Wells: Campbell Soup Playhouse, Phillip Marlowe and Sam Spade, Ozzie and Harriette, and numerous others.

Outside of school and work, I can be found in my Scion driving around Albuquerque listening to Frank Sinatra, Dave Brubeck, Vic Damone, Nat King Cole, and many others on my CD player.

Well, that was an extensive introduction. Still, nice to find others to discuss these fascinating things with. Glad a forum like this exists.

well if this is an introduction arena ....

First of all my name is Davie and yes i live in Dundee , Scotland .

During the day i am an Engineer , specialising in CNC turning and milling (the boring stuff) , however in leisure time i'm an R&B Dj (not one of the new R&B nonsense ) playing only original vinyl from the 50's & 60's some of which can reach thousands of pounds for one 7" single (where most of my money goes ).

With this in mind i run my own club in Edinburgh called BASICS and am one of the resident Dj's at the FLIPside Revolution Club in Barcelona,Spain as well as gigs in Milan and Lavarone in Italy and all over the UK .

My personal style is late 50's early 60's (in line with my music) and most of my clothes are vintage though i contradict this era by wearing spats on occasion ....LOVE hats too and have 2 pork-pie (popeye doyle style) , a pinched pork-pie as well as numerous caps (8 piece newsboy and plain)

well thats it

Whats your thoughts on the Fed Lounge so far?

Welcome!

Hello to all of you! It's nice to see so many new faces joining us every day. Our membership is growing by leaps and bounds:)

Please make sure you check out this sticky in The Observation Bar. It's a thread where those who are new can introduce themselves. It's a great thread to learn about other members, as well as a great way for other members to learn a bit about you. Being that it's a sticky, it's easily accessible at the top of the first page in the OB. When in a few days this introduction could get lost in the thousands of other threads we have on the lounge, your introduction in the sticky will always be the first thing seen as one enters the OB. It's nice to keep all of the introductions in this one area so any member just has to go to this one thread to see all the new and interesting people who are joining up.

It's very nice to meet you all!:) I look forward to all of the great contributions you will make. The more new members we have, the better this already incredible forum gets:)

"Who are those guys?"

Hi ScionPI2005 and welcome to the lounge. I like your Pinkerton avatar. Do they still use the old graphic or is there something new? We have a lot in common as far as our collecting backgrounds and our interests in the Golden Era. I've got thousands of old radio shows as well, and 78's, and old typewriters, (on &on). I've been acquiring it all since I was a kid and none of my friends could figure me out! Very fun!

You'll love the Fedora Lounge. I sure like hanging out with so many like minded folks. :)

Thanks everyone for the kind welcome. I must say I'm rather excited to be here with folks who know what I'm talking about (in regards to the style and sound of yesteryear) ha! Some of my friends in college have no clue what I'm talking about when I ramble on about tube radios and old detective radio shows.

To answer your question Miss Lucy, I actually do believe that my passion lies in the era from 1920's-1950's. I just think that things were cooler back then. As a basic example, I have a 1930's rotary telephone on my desk that works; and I use it. It scares the pants off me sometimes when it rings so loud (heh) but seeing that I have appliances that are over 70 years old means they must have been made right! I mean, look at cell phones...companies expect us to get a new one every two years at best. What happened to having things that lasted?

Earp, the Pinkerton logo has changed a little over the years. They still have the basic 'eye', yet it has kinda become more high-tech looking. Just do a google image search for Pinkerton, and I'm sure you'd see the difference.

I actually have slightly considered applying for Pinkterton after getting my Criminology degree and completing three years PI experience; but from the look if things, they're mainly armed security now; sort of drifted away from the classic detective style. It's the thrill of the hunt that excites me, not carrying a gun and being a security guard.

I'm sure I'll copy and paste my intro into the proper place now. Thanks again for the warm comments.

I agree, I'm new here too but already I'm in love.

I'll be up north around that time so I may well give it a visit. And what is it exaclty you do best?

Not really due to lack of friends as enthusiastic as me. Although I have been to the Rakehell's Revels. Beautiful venue, laid back atmosphere and great margaritas.

Fellow lounger Marq has been filling me in on what’s on in London, there seems to be something every night of the week!

Desk fans? That's interesting. Care to share some pics?

Is the Scion the car you drive?
If so, nice car. We are thinking of getting one (useful if you have a child).
