Just a quick note to say that my Fed 4 arrived yesterday -- the dark brown model. Already got an Indy bash in it and wanted to wear it today but . . .

IT'S OVER 100 DEGREES OUT THERE TODAY!

So, my trouble is twofold: I wear size 8; and there's hardly any cool weather here. I wore my Dobbs straw Harvey hat to work today.

As soon as I got my hands on the open crown Fed 4, I immediately thought to myself, "I should get another one in a different color and try a different style." I don't yet own a black or light brown ("Tawny Fawn") hat.

Anyone out there have any ideas for a size 8 head? Makers, styles, etc.? I've been looking and the pickin's are slim.
You may need to have someone make you a custom hat.

My Churchill came in today. The ebay auction was listed as NOS, and it definitely seems to be unworn. the brim was almost completely flat when it came, very stiff with hardly any flanging at all, and no swoop to the brim. I added a bit of a downturn to the front, but I don't want to mess with the back. The felt is very fine, and it looks like it'll take a new shape without steam. Only one flaw I found, there's a spot on the front pinch area where it looks like another hat pressed into the felt and left a mark. It's not too noticeable luckily. Overall, I'm very happy for $40 shipped.

The $88 price tag makes me think this is a newer hat, probably from the '70s with that price.

Here is a newly acquired Borsalino ,40s vintage, that is really really mint , I love the color as it works with just about any color clothing.

The hat really looks very good on you, and I agree that the color is very nice as well. It is also nice to see how you have the brim fixed on it. Classy to say the least, as most of your hats are!

Color Change

I got a "new" hat today, too (the Dobbs in the other recent post I've had for a few weeks). It's not quite a new hat because I had a Turquiose one, but returned it in favor of this Powder Blue color. Hats Plus was great on customer service and very prompt!

I love the decoration on this Capas Untouchable.

New hat, and also new poster. :cool3:

Really, these Untouchables aren't anything too special. Very stiff, almost carboard-y wool felt, although they resist rain very well. This one feels larger than the same-size one I returned. But for the cheapness of the materials, it still looks fantastic and has been drawing more compliments than any hat I've owned before!

The kind of hat that costs just a few bucks... but makes you feel like a million!:first::wof:

Thanks, its so unworn that it is easy to wear it anyway, and the felt is on the thin side which makes it a good warm weather wearer.

Some of you might remember this from the ebay thread, but I won this about a month ago:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/200635813268?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
It had some issues. It was dirty, the ribbon was in bad shape, had no liner, and some critter damage, including a fairly prominent line that went most of the way around the crown. You can see it a little in the original ebay poster's pics.

Anyway, I took it up to Gary White and just got it back today. Cleaned, new ribbon, liner, and a remarkable job (in my opinion) of eliminating the most obvious signs of moth damage. There is some on the bottom of the brim that he couldn't erase, but I'm not complaining. I'm very pleased with the results!

Thanks, RBH. I seem to have forgotten how to upload pics, though. When I select pics from my hard drive they I can't seem to get them to my post. I'll read the FAQ for the 12th time and see if there's something I've been missing.

Here are a couple of my recent acquisitions, a vintage Royal Stetson and Pilgrim, both probably 1950s. I still need to rebash both lids, especially the pilgrim.

Well, they're here. The two custom hats that Mike Moore made for me. They look great, but I'll let them speak for themselves.

I love the lined ribbon, my wife and Mike picked it out from Mike's vintage ribbon racks. It makes the hat.
Color is Granite and it's a 100% hare felt

This one is 100% beaver felt and the color is Sahara, I love the color and the feel of the felt.
I think I'll work on the crease a bit though. After seeing them both together I'd like to get the Sahara into more of a drop shape as well.

What can I say, true works of the hat maker's art. :eusa_clap
