Mayser - I know that there are toppers with big sweats but, from that angle, the sweat seems to run more than half the length of the crown. Please measure that when you get it, as it looks to be the biggest sweat I've ever seen. Great buy. :eusa_clap

Thanks! :) I am very interested to see this one. It also came with the original box (although in poor condition). I will check the sweat measurements and post more detail photos once it arrives.

You have to laugh. This hat at ebay is described as a 'Bogart fedora':

Can you see Bogie with this lid?

1920 Dobbs

Received this Dobbs long/silk finish hat recently. It was made between 1917 and 1922, so it's one of my oldest. Also has a Cavanagh Edge. More in the Dobbs Diner.

Whenever i sell a hat on Ebay, I include a note with the invoice asking if the buyer has heard of the FL. Chances are they have, but who knows, maybe I've turned a few newbies on to this wonderland.

Brad, that's a beautiful specimen. How can you know the date of origin with such accuracy? Curious is all. Normally people throw out one- or two-decade guesses.

Yes it is. I asked about that one too. Should be a nice hat.

Pshew. I feel better now! I like that box, too and we have an actual Resistol hat WITH a Resistol hat box. That works for me. Tho I need to get an insert ring to go with it. I have too many gray hats, tho. I think I need to sell a few off.

Dobbs makes it easy on their early hats. The key is the liner tip, mostly in the addresses. Dobbs moved from 242 to 244 Fifth Avenue sometime between 1912 and 1915. However, the flagship C&K store at 620 Fifth Avenue opened May 1, 1917, so we know that's the earliest date. Dobbs moved from 620 in 1928, and the building was torn down to make way for Rockefeller Center. So, we have it down to between 1917 and 1928. Finally, the scroll underneath the Dobbs logo reads "The Knapp Felt Shops." This was replaced by "New York's Leading Hatters" in 1922 as focus was shifted away from the C&K brand. That leaves us with a pretty short 5+ year window for this hat.
