I think Lizzie seems to have analysed it pretty thoroughly and what she's says is a good assessment of humour IMHO. She's nailed it really.

I'd also go along with lighten up too. Just relax, enjoy yourselves and (deep breath)........laugh :eeek:

Take everyone posting in this thread to a New Year's party on the Queen Mary. There'd be two groups. I know which group I'd dance and drink with lol

Three groups. Don't forget
The Grapefruit Cabal.

Disclamer: At no time am I intending
to stereotype or offend any lovers of
grapefruit by insinuating that they may be
or have been involved in any nefarious undertakings.

First off, it wasn't funny.

Second off, I'm not a feminist. I am offended by the continuing stereotype of men being lazy, unemotional, beer-swilling dunces who like sex, food, things that go fast, and things that go boom. This is a pretty recent stereotype too. I'm even more offended that there's men out there who think it's perfectly okay to perpetuate that stereotype, especially on a forum dedicated to the culture of 60+ years ago.

Scenario: men sitting in the "man cave" with a HUGE TV, posters of models, watching a football game, whooping it up. Women are upstairs, having tea and discussing how they don't understand their husbands because they're really just "big kids" they feel the need to take care of. I'm sick of it.

See the idea of a joke - esp one based in stereotyping - is that of course not all < fill in the blank > are "like that".
People spending so much time in "offended" mode really will live shorter lives. I'm sure of that.

But it is okay if we are offended. What makes one person heartily guffaw, another chuckle mildly might offend mightily or mildly another. Who is to say that the catalyst is offensive or not? It all comes down to personal tastes. Unfortunately there is a perception out there to silence anything that one might find offensive. It would be very difficult, if not impossible, to find something out there that is not offensive to at least one person. I am not a fan of Lady Gaga, but that doesn't mean she needs to be boxed up and shipped away. A joke that is not intentionally harmful, is just a joke whether it be a lame joke or rip-roarin'. I know that I will be offended at least once a day; that is my problem in a crowded world.
Rambling concluded.

It's just a silly stereotype. I'm really surprised that people got so upset about this. This joke was posted on another forum I'm on and had nowhere near this reaction.

I'm sure almost, if not all our male loungers are far from this stereotypical guy, and the same can be said of our female loungers and the lady counterpart in the joke. It's just a joke though, don't think so hard about it.

Heck, my mother can turn wrenches on My Harley and Dad's Harley just as good as my Pa can, and better than I can!

I think we all know people who fit stereotypes. I have a couple of friends who would fit this joke to a T. That's why they're funny!

But implicit in jokes revolving around stereotypes, I have to insist, is recognition. We laugh at stereotypes because crude as they are, they supposedly contain a shred of truth and a degree of identification. Otherwise, you won't find them funny. That's why some jokes do not work outside of their cultural context (and, I tell myself, why I never laugh at French films).

I actually wish I was the quiet type when my vehicle won't start. I'm the kind that's in the garage cussing and throwing wrenches lol lol lol

It looks like everyone is missing an entire half a joke!
Does no one find funny the man's reaction to the fact that his motorcycle won't start? His moody, distracted, distant, non-verbal and introverted personality shift is as hilarious as the woman's reaction to the situation!

I think the missed humor in the joke says a lot more about our perceptions of sexism than all this noble granstanding.

I didn't really think it was funny only because as a humor piece it just wasn't very well-written.

The "she said" portion was a little too wordy and the "he said" part was too brief that halfway through it I totally lost interest and didn't even get to the punch line, which at any rate, was buried under all the verbosity. I think the former could have been a bit more succinct and the latter could have used a little more amplification while still conveying the intended imagery.
