A night of derbies... the high opening bid and substantial freight cost might have kept the action light on this old brown beauty.

Indeed, a bowler night to remember. These gents would be proud:

Ah! That makes sense. I didn't see the "before" pics, but I thought that maybe someone re-blocked the hat and chopped the brim. How much wider was the brim originally?

I did a google search and found the original auction...

I count 3 sets of double stitching in the original pics and in the new auction. Maybe its camera angle thats making the crown look so tall and the brim so short?
Not camera angles--looks like the edge(welt or binding) was removed-likely a wide-brim in keeping with the "Bold-Look" styling. 6/23/38 date for first use Stetson Medalist, $7.50 in the first half of 40's.

Looks like you are correct on the Stetson Hempstead as the seller of the second one sold bought the earlier one from Vintage Comics. But the second one sold for over a hundred less than was paid for the earlier sale. Not a very good return on investment!

I'm not too surprised about a 70's OR getting that much. Because it is an OR there are plenty of people on ebay that will pay for it. Seen it happen many times.

I hate ebay. Some A hole stole my hat last minute. It makes me want to quit trying to get vintage hats anymore
