As I mentioned I have some small size hats that I have collected. I am into preserving pre WWII era hats. I wear all my hats but I am very careful with the old ones. Also people back in the day were for the most part very careful with their high priced (assuming they could afford one) dress hats. Yes they used umbrellas!

I tend to agree but the old hats need to be carefully handled (which I am afraid isn't always the case).

I don't have any hats that I don't wear (though I have too many to wear any very often)... excepting one or two that are too large or too small. The top hats all fit and are waiting for the proper occasion. Late 1950s Cavanaghs like the one above are quite common, though perhaps not in this large a size. I have bought several and have sold all of them, except one.

At that size & if you could get it for the entry bid, $405.95 is not that bad for a true collectors item = those brims aren't made anymore & likely never will....a part of hat history.

You are stating pretty clearly it is a hat "not to wear" but my initial post doesn't address wearing. Saying it is a collectors item isn't same as saying is shouldn't ever be worn. Reading a little between the lines which is okay. I just wanted it clear that I wear 'em...

I nailed this one right out of the chute this afternoon. A Stetson *** Prince.
Does anyone recall what this model was called? Was this "the Robin Hood" perhaps,
or was that another manufacturer?

That's a honey, Blaine. Real nice "suede" finish on those babes. With practice, we can get something approximating it these days, but I'd like to see the process the factory used to get that finish back when that hat was made.

Yeah, it was pretty sweet. The felt on the Dobbs version is like fine chamois.
I can't wait for this one! I'm chuffed! It still even has the feathers.

Mystic, I understand what you mean. I've held on to a couple of hats that I really liked but were just a bit too small. With a 7 7/8 head, it seems like most hats are. What I found was that they make great presents for friends. You know, "Here , see if this fits." For one guy, it was his introduction to the wonderful world of decent hats. Good feeling, all around.

Rick and Alan, I posted a newspaper ad from 1954 featuring the Tijuana in the thread "Hat Ads from Newspapers". Those Tijuanas are such cool hats. I feel inspired to take a a shot of Don Julio just by looking at the photos of both of your hats!

Gripe;

I'd been watching this hat for a week or two, saw that it had a "make an offer" option, thought "I've never tried this before I'll give it a spin". The seller accepted in less than an hour. Cool! I did Paypal right then. This was Thursday March 5th. I saw Monday in the delivery time and thought, beautiful. Days later I noticed that the seller didn't post a tracking number. Maybe he's just one of those guys that doesn't go to the trouble? then today, Monday I notice a tracking number is added. Not that it has shipped but that a label has been created. I'm thinking "hunh?". It's then that I notice the delivery is Monday the 16th! Now, I'm kicking myself for not reading the not-so-fine print.
I've gotten so used to Ebay sellers shipping so quickly I assumed "Monday" was Monday the 9th not Monday the 16th. No problem, Hopefully I'll show you guys this hat next week.
