Any opinions on JB Hill boots? How do they compare to Lucchese, Nocona, etc (at their best, not low end or Mexico made)
If you’re going to wear a cowboy hat, you need to wear a pair of cowboy boots. Just sayin’.

Here’s my personal heirarchy, sans custom made, leaving out quite a few good brands and starting at the top:
1) Lucchese
2) Tony Lama
3) Boulet
4) Justin
5) Dan Post
6) Ariat

Numbers 2 through 6 are interchangeable, depending on the purpose, look and value. Number 1 is solid and has no peers.

JB Hill is a custom boot maker in Texas. He makes great boots. Hill boots are almost on a par with ML Leddy boots, another Texas custom boot maker and greatly coveted.

Perhaps my favorite toe, executed with a premium skin, atop a favorite heel height, topped by a bone shaft with great stitching and flaunted by Willow.
Greg, thanks. Couldn’t have worded it any better myself!

Seems to be a big variation in shaft leather thickness between brands. My older (white label) Nocona's above flop right over.

Shaft leather on the Bonds i posted is the thinnest, finest, most pliable leather of all my boots (sounds like hat talk) by a longshot. In my opinion, that speaks to quality craftmanship. Plus the stitching helps and they are still virginal.

Gentlemen,

What do you prefer for conditioning lizard skin vamps? I have a pair of Nocona's I assume they are tegu, what's good for touching up scuffs and what's good for general condioning?

thanks,

Rob

For what it’s worth i use this, Scout Exotic Boot Conditioner. Other’s have suggested Bick 4 as well.
Nocona lizard on left, Lama lizard in middle.
Yours are nice.

I just hit the button to order the Bicks from Amazon, got the whole kit plus exotic formula, protect the investment.

I just noticed on my Nocona that 2 of the lemonwood pegs have fallen out, reason for concern? I'm not worried about them falling apart, rather water getting in.

I will add that these boots make me think of a "BULL" ostrich. Look at the heel counters and vamps near the

The standing shaft on a pair of cowboy boots is usually the result of "stays" or stiffeners in the shaft. Generally speaking it's a stiff piece of leather or other material placed between the shaft leather and liner during the build. Stitching can contribute to stiffness as well as the heel slide. I have TL's from the 60's that are very stiff and a pair from the 80's not nearly so. All of my customs have stays in the shaft to one degree or another.

I would be. Only a couple of reasons for this happening that I can think of. Probably stored in very dry conditions, exposed to great temp/humid variables or the holes were punched a bit large for the pegs and they worked themselves out over time. I have had to hammer a few of mine over the years to get them back flush but have never lost one.
