Don't see them near as often but there is still one at this western shop the next Co. over that I visit occasionally.

We also have this one in front of a shop I used to frequent in Huntsville. Bought my first pair of decent boots there. Damn, that was a long time ago.

That is so cool! I really like the Jr's western world sign, with spurs! Thanks for posting great western memorabilia!

I don't remember seeing many huge Boot signs like those except for the neon type like Leddy's. The cast aluminum ones were about 4' maybe 4'6 tall & were were usually fastened on concrete by the entrance.

I think I remember the J.R.s. Want there on University? Been in the Preston's a few times, too. They're one of the few western stores left, but there's not much that interests me in there these days. I guess they've been there by the exit for 20 years or better, but weren't they a good bit farther west on 72 at one time? Or am I thinking of a different place?

There were a couple of those giant boots down this way, too. One was a place called The Bootlegger. Their sign was a Tony Lama boot, if I'm remembering right. It was painted Roll Tide red and white and had Christmas lights strung on it year round. I had many pairs of cowboy and work boots from there back in the 70s and 80s. Massey's was a good one right in downtown. They were a retailer for Rocket Buster back in the early 90s. That's where I got mine. They didn't have a big boot, but they did have a life sized fiberglass horse.

This photo is just a random one I found on the internet. The one I wrote about has been gone for close to 30 years and I couldn't find any pictures of it.

Yeah, Dale they're still on University, about a half mile west of the Parkway. Prestons may have been further west at one time but their current location is the only one I've visited.

Not much interests me anymore from either of them but I go to Prestons for new Wranglers and they have a huge Carhartt inventory.

The real shame is Boot Barn has come into the area near Bridgestreet and it's almost equidistant from the two locally owned shops. Ariats are taking over.

We got the Boot Barn down here a couple years ago, too. They don't have a cool sign.

I have this photo I found online a while back, can't remember where, but cannot find out any info about the boots, anyone have a lead? I tried a Google Image search, no luck.

Quite the pair, Rob and I'm not a stingray fan but I'd wear those. Look up the leather artist Peter Main. He's done a lot of interesting boot tops, especially for Little's in San Antonio. Those have a familiar profile to me but that doesn't mean much. There are a few, but only a few I'm aware of doing similar work. Leather coloring/painting/carving on such a level is pretty damn rare.

I tried that Greg, his site hasn't been updated in 12 years and I see no boots on it from them.

I'm not a huge fan of stingray either but these are another level, they be fun to wear with a suit.

Some of you may not be aware but stingray leather, known as shagreen, is the traditional material of choice for the grip area of the samurai's sword.

And they used it on their armor as well. Some boot makers won't work with it and those that do go through a lot of titanium coated needles.

My wife has been at it again! USA made Dan Post lizards. They are pretty nice. My standard practice is to apply pecards to any reptile skins.

Those look great! The pecards seems to really give a nice depth to the color, judging from these and the pythons you posted in the hat thread.

The Duke getting fitted. Lucchese probably still does it for celebs. I don't know if they do any major sponsorships, cowboys or musicians anymore, if so, I imagine they do it for them. I may have posted this before but the big three got to be the big three through mail order, stock sizes along with MTM. I read somewhere that at one point TL had over 50,000 custom lasts on hand.

I'm sure they'll still make you a custom-lasted pair if you're the POTUS or the Terminator. All others probably need to visit their nearest authorized retailer.

I've been trying to find some info on a boot I believe made by either Hyer or Olathe at one time called the "Sandhill" boot. I'm pretty sure it was one of these two mfgs. because when I read about it a long time ago it was a design created for the plains cowboys who complained about the grit and sand getting under their spur straps and wearing out the stitching where the vamp joins the shaft and if I remember correctly, it came out of Kansas. The boot is essentially a cowboy boot with a high vamp and heel counter and no stitching to the top until well above where the spur strap would rest.

I had found some catalog images before but didn't mark them and I've been unable to find it again. Lisa Sorrell makes an example of the style and it seems I read somewhere where she was talking about the style and where she got the idea but I can't find that either.

Here are some examples of what I'm talking about from Lisa Sorrell.
